Re: [Hot Toys] Platoon: Sergeant Barnes Collectible Figure

That's freaking AWESOME!!!

The step cut barrel is wrong, isn't it?
Yes, wrong for the era, and the movie. Maybe HT will fix that.

Nice. Will definitely pick this up (with Taylor this will be my first Nam era figures). To the experts, how is the rifle, accuracy-wise? I know it was mentioned that the barrel is wrong, but it looks like at least the carry handle is somewhat correct (no railed upper receiver). On a side note, I imagine we are going to be getting lots of Nam era bashes and maybe even figure releases with the imminent release of COD Black Ops.

Sgt. Elias Grodin, SSgt. Robert Barnes, and Lt. Wolfe are armed with Colt Model 653P carbine assault rifles, noted by their rounded forward assists and 14.5" barrels, as the 653Ps and 653 export models were made under license in the Philippines. They were probably meant to stand in (albeit poorly) for the XM177E1 or E2. It is thus anachronistic to see these in the movie, as they were not used during the Vietnam war.

And yet more information concerning the inaccuracy of the carbine used in the movie...

In fact, the carbine used in the movie is the M653P version which was made under license in the Philippines (looking closely you can see the additional markings "MADE... UNDER LICENSE... COLT..." on the right side of the lower receiver when Sgt. Elias changes his magazine - approx. 1:12 running time of the movie). This may have it's reason in the fact that the movie was made there in 1986, and the Army of the Philippines was using localy produced M16A1 and M653 rifles.

So... the movie is inaccurate. Hence the weapon being "wrong" on the figure. It is true to the movie, not the actual rifle used in the Vietnam war.
