Battle of the Quad-Eyes - Major Elf vs Mike5401

I just got my set of Major.Rod/Elfbait's NVG's in the mail, along with the last bit of paint I needed for finishing up my set of Mike5401 NVG's. I opted to attach my set of Mike5401's to my SF less out of a personal preference for one over the other and more for the fact that the baseplate on the helmet was solidly glued on.

These are both very solid sets and you'd be happy with either one. The Mike5401 set does require some more painting and glue work (with room for error, if you check the right side of the NVG's - that's either excess glue or the paint didn't dry properly, I'll need to re-examine it later) and I found attaching the cables to the Mike5401 set to be slightly more difficult, but some gluing and assembly is involved in either case to properly attach the NVG's to the helmet.

I also noticed that the Major Elf set was noticeably larger than the Mike5401, though I can't offer any commentary on the proper scale. Also, both offer different mounting options, but both are correct as near as I can tell.

Here's some more pics of the metal version of the Mike5401 GPNVG's.

Jeepers, creepers!
Where'd you get them peepers?
Tell me, son, where'd you get them eyes?

Looks great Ryan! It's nice to see these painted up, I just haven't had time to do so. As for size, I based mine off of 1:1 measurements, then made sure they looked in scale attached to the helmet and figures face. Glad someone did a review, it's great, either way whether you go with Major Elf or mine you can't go wrong! :):woohoo

Just a quick note, these sets are now being done in resin, I found a new caster who is doing these for me now and he works in resin only, detail is the same just in resin!

Jeff,

To answer your question those are blue colored lenses I include with the set, 4 for the front and 4 for the rear of the goggles.

Thanks :applause

Since I only have Mike's version I can only attest to it. I would've bought one frome Major Rod/Elfbait if Mike didn't offer one. So like they say, you can't go wrong. And I wouldn't wait for SS or Dam to make one, I say go for it and buy from them instead. :thumb

To answer your question...first batch was made of metal. detail is awesome, but I think the next batches was made of resin?, which I think was better. Downside of the first batch is it's kinda heavy to stay upwards on the helmet. But otherwise it's superb.

Her's mine mounted: (Mike's Version)

When I saw the title of the thread I was quite concerned. These things can invariably cause bad blood. I'm glad you did it the way you did CC.

Like Mike says, you can't go wrong whichever path one chooses.

No matter what it is an initiative to break away from the monopoly manufacturers have on "cool bits". If it works like Elfbait and I want it to the hobby won't be limited to the long waits and limited availability that results from waiting for enough kits to be released by manufacturers and broken down by dealers. Maybe we can even mitigate some of the cost creep out there.
