I'm just getting started in this scale so I'm still trying to find everything I need, one thing I haven't seen listed on evilbay is a 1/6th scale ruler, I tried making one but trying to get those little lines on straight and even just isn't working, much easier then previous scales I've worked with,HO and 1/35, but those ruler are readily available, so if someone could please point me in the right direction I would sure appreciate it.

The 1/6 rulers I mentioned are rare since that was the only site that offered them and they were made specifically for that website. That website only gave them for a limited time since my first order from them came with it.

LOL! I did not read that.

You have to look up architectural rulers. 1/6 scale architectural rulers. Where do you live? The rulers should be at your local arts store, but 1/6 maybe hard to find. I have one. I will take a look and give you the company which makes them.

It is simple. 1"=6" to real life. Therefore height of a real dinner table is about 3', or 6" in 1/6. 36 inches (you have to convert the 3' to inches=36") divide by 6 inches. So take the real measurement, convert it from feet to inches and divide by 6.

I used to a lot of scale drawing in college and for work. I majored in architecture.

That's what I do. In my mind I divide the length of some thing into six then I reduce it down to the first slice. :)

If you want to see how small things look like in 1/6 (like scissors, for instance), put it in Xerox machine and scale it down to 16.67%.

As you can plainly see, I am NOT an engineer. Hehehe.

MATH . . . who would have thought it would apply to the 1:6 hobby?

;) :p

"You need to learn math young man!"

"No. Why do I need to learn math? It's not like I'm ever going to use it one day. You think I'll need to know math when I start making clothes and stuff for my 12" GI JOE figures?"

Do you have an iphone? There's an app for it made by a friend of mine. You just put in the scales you're measuring from/going to and add the figures. The app is called model kit. Works in any scale, and you can add your own custom scales, plus it can calculate cones, and even work out the scale of something (Say you had a sheet of ortho views and need to work out their scale, all you need is the full size of the item and it will tell you the scale of the plans).

The scale indicates that one foot tall figure equates to a six foot tall man. That is, one foot equals 72 inches in "real world" measurement.

Divide 1 by 6, and you get 0.0166666666666667 - or as Wolfram Alpha puts it, 16.67%.

Multiply 72 inches by 0.0166666666666667, and you get 12 inches.

If 1 inch in real life equaled 1 scale foot, then a 6 inch tall figure would represent 6 foot.

To add to the confusion, the figures are all manner of heights, many, if not most under six foot in scale. I grabbed an SS aircrew figure, and it measured 11-3/4 inches from top of the head, to the sole of the foot. That would make him about 5 foot 10-1/2 inches tall.

Thats what happens when I try to do math with out all my stuff handy,my wife and I have been tiling the kitchen all week and I haven't ran out to my man cave to double check my measurements,I had done a ruler of sorts,it's not very handy, which is why I've been trying to find a good one, a nice stainless one would be preferred. Please check this picture out and see if you think it's correct. Thanks.

Hatman posted a link to Hungry Lizard Studios for a variety of scale rulers a while back. Unfortunately the link is dead. I have the pdf file of the rulers, which can be printed (I printed mine on clear plastic made for inkjet printers). If there is a way to post it here, I will email the file to someone who knows how to post it. PM me if you have the computer skills I lack...

Thanks a lot guys, That worked perfectly,I get a little anal when it come to dimensions on my projects so I knew the rough ruler I made just wasn't going to cut it, now if I can find a clear plastic to print one out I think that would be very helpful,if not I can laminate the paper one for now. Thanks again. Bob.

If you want a quick fix for all 1/6th measurements ...Scale Conversion Calculator - Jimbob-Wan's

Simply type in the real life size, and it automatically calculates it in 1/6th.
It gives the result in either inches or centimeters......i've found it invaluable.

Use the top section for your calculations, but on the bottom one, you can up-scale....but posting the model's measurements and getting its real life size.

Hope this helps.

Neil.

I do a lot of scratch building so I need to have a ruler I can use to build with, the one posted is perfect, large enough to get down to small details, yet if you tape a couple together you can work on larger items. This one I just covered with clear packing tape,I'm going to have my wife laminate one to make it a little more durable. Thanks again guys.
