Stuff that concerns me about current 1/6 military figure releases during Wartime...

Given the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine ive seen listings for new Russian figures that look identical to the soldiers currently participating in the conflict along with their identifying insignia. (The Infamous Z). It is not just the likeness of the soldiers themselves but sometimes also the places they fought in, even specifically mentioned on the box art for damtoys like the port city of Kherson...

I mean... This is nothing new ofcourse, Afghanistan/Iraq war figures released during those conflicts too and we all know how those wars turned out (Freedom force!) and figures modelled on the likeness of flight suit George Bush are pretty iffy to say the least. But still it does worry me that things might get a little sketchy today the longer this current war drags on. Especially as we are not likely to see the Ukrainians represented given that most of the figures are made in China. I love Damtoys, E&S and so on... But if this becomes more than just releasing a figure for the benefit of the consumer and business, its hard for me to feel comfortable purchasing these right now.

This subject has been touchy since OSW started 20 years ago. There will always be some subject matter that just rubs folks the wrong way, and some manufacturers that are more than willing to not only broach the subject, but make figures about them.

Certain WWII subjects, the ongoing GWOT figures, polarizing/any politicians, questionable movie figures.... Are they in good taste, or a good idea? Probably not. But the only way to know for any manufacturer is if a figure sells or not.

The current Damtoys figures are no exception. Sporting specific unit markings and other things. E&S is a bit less blatant about it, and sometimes their figures border on pure fantasy as opposed to any real life representation. The current FSB figures have a bunch of real gear, but don't seem to be following any sort of actual unit, and just labelled as Russian FSB. The fact that it's called Russian is enough to set some folks off.

As long as we can keep our opinions and tempers in check while on the forums and groups, and keep interactions civil-ish, the figures are just representations of something we see, or have seen on the TV, or internet, or magazines. If we don't like it, our "voices" will be heard with our purchases. Or lack thereof.

Personally, I've never seen more product as a bad thing.

Obviously that mileage is going to differ for everyone. I remember a very long time ago, when Hot Toys released a Michael Jackson figure, that it pissed off some people here. And some people, in general across the hobby.

Something I used to say in the old days - The product you don't like and don't enjoy, but if it sells well, creates down the road opportunities for other unrelated product one day that you might want to see.

^ The above is not just my stance, it was also the core stance of Ronin Six here long ago.

I have no desire to have a Michael Caine as the Batman butler, Alfred Pennyworth, as a figure in my collection. But the robust sales and demand for The Dark Knight stuff through the Nolan-verse created that opportunity. Even if I don't want that figure, I'm happy there was some kind of option available for those who did. We can support each other as general collectors while disagreeing on all other kinds of out-of-hobby viewpoints.

If too many collectors find the theme here too garish, as you might, then the sets won't sell well and the natural evolution of the hobby will self cannibalize anything you don't find appropriate.

If many collectors want to purchase the product ( their personal viewpoints is another matter, to each their own), then it might open doors for that arcane unrelated topic one day that you might want in your collection.

Look for the win. Even if it's a small win in your book. And if it's not a win to you in any fashion, look for the win in the next situation. Only you can determine where your litmus test holds for some kind of product. I do understand and sympathize where you are coming from though.

I appreciate the topic and your honesty here.

Think the the biggest issue I have with the damtoys figure pictured is how on the nose it is. Comes with a Wagner mercenary patch (Who are engaged in numerous atrocities right now), the Z and the box art mentioned Kherson which was just recently almost completely decimated.

They are just symbols ofcourse. But yeah... Just weirdly specific and very relevant. I guess it would be worse if the proceeds directly funded Wagner and Russia's war effort lol hopefully thats not the case.
It's fair to feel that concern about it. It shows your humanity.

As another example, it's no different than being against everything the Nazi's did in WWII, and there are literally hundreds of figures made regarding that subject, including some made of those real life villains.

The main thing in this hobby is to detach those heinous acts from the figure being released, and see it as a historical reference of something terrible rather than support of those acts. And if that means not buying the figures in question, that's a fair reaction to the release of this, or any figure.

It's also hard to know what the intent of the figure being made is as well. Just to make some money of current conflicts is most likely. Lets hope it's not because they support those activities/behaviours.

I FEEL THE SAME SPACE MARINE, BUT TO BE HONEST, I HAVE NEVER LIKED OR TRUSTED THE SOVIETS. AND THE FACT THEY MADE A FIGURE SO QUICK ABOUT THAT BATTLE AND THAT UNIT, I DON'T KNOW, ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT MAKES ME GO HMMMMM.
MAYBE THAT COULD BE YOUR NEXT PROJECT, A UKRAINIAN SOLDIER, OR AS I CALL THEM, FREEDOM FIGHTERS. I ONLY COLLECT WWII AND HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO MODERN STUFF OR I WOULD DO IT.
I agree with you. My wife is Ukrainian. She and I were in Ukraine in January, helping her family. In the past, I admired Russian culture and the Russian people. I learned to speak Russian. I visited Moscow twice and had a great time. Now, ALL Russians can go f'ck themselves. In terms of the new 1/6th scale Russian releases, the solution is simple. Don't buy them. I hope they rot on the shelves like their full-size comrades rot to fertilize the fields of Ukraine.

I have written about this briefly last august Commentary - Shifts in the 1/6 World — The Armoury . Following that, ES has made the dive into producing RU figures, and my guess the portion of RU figures will continue to surge.

Times have changed, the US / West is no longer the major market, at least for 1/6. The Mainland China market makes up for a huge % of the market and they get to "dictate" the trend 1/6 moves in. Currently in China, Russia is seen as the "liberating heroes", and the Chinese collectors are craving for more and more depictions of these "heros". Which explains the DAM russians with Z markings and st george ribbon.

The Russian figures are devoured by the Chinese market and the 1/6 manufacturers will naturally move in the direction of the money.
