I seem to recall a thread about drilling a hole into the heel of the figure's foot and then attaching the figure to the base via a nail in the base used as a "post" that would go up into the figure's heel???

Any advice on how to do this?

first, you might try poking a hole in the heel of the boot and run a short length of coat hanger
up the leg (inside the trousers) and tape it just below the knee. other end fit into a tight hole
in the base. if that's not stable enough or makes the pose look too rigid, the only damage is
the hole in the sole of the boot. are you going for action pose or standing vertical?

That's actually a good idea. I am hoping for more than an "standing" pose, but it wouldn't be running or something else that required a foot off of the ground.
