Hi there the learned ones. I have a query on SEAL team number. I came accross SEAL Team 6, Team 8 and a few other team numbers. Does these numbers represent a different operation group ie Team 8 will be specialised in boarding operations, while some other teams are specialised in HALO, UDT etc.

Any info is greatly appreciated :D

The number will give you the area of operations for the Team. Inside the team there will be specialty teams (platoons I assume I don't know much on SEAL organization). I do know that all even numbered teams are stationed on the east coast and all odd number teams are on the west.

AFAIK, In the very beginning there were only SEAL Teams 1 and 2: East Coast and West Coast, during Vietnam. SEAL Six was formed for CT operations and was intentionally given the 'Six" number--according to some books--in order to confuse then Soviet Russia as to the number of SEAL Teams in existance.

So I think that SEAL teams Three to Five were formed after SEAL 6/DEVGRU's inception. As Echo and Pave mentioned, they seem to be ivided according to area of responsibility. As to skills, I think all SEAL teams have to be HALO/UDT qualified, but there are some little nuances. I recall reading that SEAL Two in particular is the only SEAL Team with Arctic Operatiosn capability (but this was based on a post-Gulf War I/Kuwait article on them in Discover magazine, so things may have changed since then).

There was this book--can't recall the title, and I only looked through in Melbourne early of this year--mentioning that SEAL Team Eight was a 'backup' team to SEAL 6/DEVGRU, but I'm afraid I can't stand for its veracity. I do know that it's mainly concerned with Naval/Maritime Spec Ops units and has plenty of good pics.

Oh yeah, as far as you guys know, there's only SEAL 1-5, SEAL 8, and DEVGRU (or whatever they call it nowadays), right? No additional SEAL teams were formed?

I really gotta go up to a Real SEAL and shake him down for info someday. Can't be a SEAL fan and be full of accuracy holes about my favorite group of frogmen. :p

Yea the seal teams are broken up into East Coast and West Coast they deal with different regions of the world. If I'm not mistaken I also think some handle specific areas of expertise while all are experts in Special Warfare - Sea, Air and Land I'm pretty sure some units are experts in Underwater demolition, counter terrorism. Also now that we have declared "war on terror" it has been common for one SEAL team to operate in a geographical zone or tactical area of another. Hope that helped a little. :thumb
