During the night of 5th - 6th June 1944, the Reverend John Gwinnett was parachuted into the dark fields of Normandy. Mis-dropped, he found himself lost in the pitch black countryside, it would take him days to find the men of 9th Parachute Battalion for which he was to care for. The film The Longest Day purports to show Rev Gwinnett's ordeal, but in fact they swapped the story with that of the US Padre who actually had to dive in the flooded fields looking for his Mass kit. Rev Gwinnett made his second parachute jump of WWII during the Rhine crossing on Operation Varsity in March 1945.
