Hit the antique stores and search for old purses. The chain work will be over leather and if the leather is still good, it's usually thin enough to do something 1:6th with, too.

My wife has a beautiful old purse that I've been picking on her for years to let me have. It was her grandmother's and I'm sure I'll never get ahold of it, but it would be perfect and I'd have about a full square foot of mail to work with.

If you are going the fabric route, Coo-model and ACI have done some decent cloth chainmail. Kaustic plastik also did a decent cloth chain mail look alike. The old Ignite and Sideshow stuff was not so good and looked a lot like disco clothing. But even those could look ok, with a lot of dry brushed brown.

There's a metal fabric used in costume jewelry that won't make real historical chain mail, but is just awesome for the fantasy Red Sonja kind (and darn you Phicen , how could you not know this?)

For our purposes you can use the Front side or the Back side for quite different effects. In the pic below the silvers are one pair of earrings (one front, one back). On the gold bracelet you can see the inner/back mesh at the top while the side meant to be seen as jewelry is bottom. I don't have a source on this material (wish I did) but I grab bits when I see them at the thrift stores. I believe Baddog-787 once found this at Hobby Lobby but it was long ago.

This is what M.A.M is referring to, but unfortunately Hobby Lobby clearance priced them a few years ago.

(warning: gratuitous self-aggrandizement ahead)

chain-mesh from purse wrong side out--

chain-mesh right side out--

I don't think you'll be happy with any type of fabric, and short of making your own maille as Zebraten always does the chain-mesh is easiest to manipulate.

I've been looking for a source for this for a while now, and having zero luck. It really is so cool, and perfect for a fantasy style chain mail. I've yet to run into it on a purse or jewelry (although I swear I've seen it BEFORE I was looking for it). If anyone actually finds someplace to order like a spool or sheet of it, you'll have my eternal gratitude.

Grab'em soon as you see them -- by which I mean thrift stores etc, not some woman on the bus wearing the earrings. :wink I've found earrings and bracelets but never was so lucky as to find the Purse others have spoken of. For purposes of Google etc does anyone have any idea of what this material would officially be called?
