Operation Gothic Serpent Delta Force gear questions

8438 Views 19 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Jeffajab
Does anyone have any decent photos of the D-Boys when they were involved in Operation Gothic Serpent?

I'm going to bash a figure but want to make it as realistic as possible - I've seen photos in which some guys were wearing tan boots and others were they appear to be wearing Danner types.

Any help much appreciated :)

Thanks

Mike:

Have you seen the film BLACK HAWK DOWN?

Have you seen the BHD inspired figures by DAM?

I'm not a well versed military expert like some of the guys here, but it all depends on the operator load out/preferences.

AFAIK, there is no 1000% accurate without any exception must be true answer short of a real life DELTA operator stating what was used in the field during that period.

All the various figures we've seen throughout the years is a depiction based on research, but there is no absolute anally correct version.

As of late, I've seen some members come off hung up on the whole it must be accurate damn it approach and perhaps losing sight of just customizing/kit bashing it to the best of their abilities and then post/share and take it from their.

Any figure we customize/kit bash can always be revised and never set in stone.

Just my $.02.

:)

I have a fair number of 1:6 DELTA operators wearing black and tan boots based on their load out variances.

My rule of thumb is this. If the operators are geared up for a "direct action", then black danner boots.

If they're out in the desert field doing recon or trying to blend in with the natives so to speak, then tan color boots.

It's not the most accurate or precise rule of thumb, but it works for me.

Both Black Hawk Down film and the figures made by Toy Soldier and DAM (based on the film) are pretty accurate for the D-Boy gear Though photographic evidence shows that most wore Altama desert boots rather than the "GSG9" Adidas boots used in the film, and again most seem to have AN/VIS NVG mount on their Protec helmet.
There are discussions about various subjects, such as carbine models or vests carried by the operators, on specialised forums across the Internet too, and a good number of photographs from Restore Hope, including Delta operators. A simple google search, as advised just above, should give you everything you need.

Thanks for the info - this picture is actually prompted me to ask the question as the boots arent the Adidas boots that are used in the movie and the Dam figures. I'll prob just go with the above image and in the end does it really matter..?!!

Nope.

It only matters that you enjoy the art of finding/hunting down the applicable pieces and assembling the figure while savoring the enjoyment and experience.

One of the few times I recollect doing just that was some years ago when I left my job working on health insurance administration (benefits/claims) for Federal employees and their families. I got burnt out and really needed some time off to rest and consider a different career/job.

On my first night after I left, I had a parts box of various loose 1:6 items and ended up assembling a DELTA operator inspired by the film using DML three-color desert BDUs, a Toy Soldier Pro-Tec helmet, 21ST, DML, and SOTW bits and pieces. I worked on the figure while chatting with friends online. It was not necessarily 100% accurate, but close enough and the experience was rewarding.

Great photo....have they got smoke/bangers taped to their mags?
Well spotted - I never actually noticed that myself! Never seen grenades taped to mags before...
The grenade taped to the mag is an interesting combo. They have unique aspects of gear and setups but there are also a lot of similarities especially with their weapons. Similar optics and all of them have lights.
Even the larger version of the photo is not quite big enough for me to tell, but it looks like those grenades have no spoons -
Ive googled it to dust but cannot find an explanation for it......run dry, send the bang while reloading?? Not exactly out of the Costa book, or Ayoob files....maybe more Haley M4-foo,but i cant shed any light on it
Or maybe its set up for the assault.....so the bang for each room is out and to hand elasticated to the weapon rather than having to fish around in a pouch........someone put me outta my misery

Ha! Same here, Dan. Been looking about, to no good end. Paul Howe is the guy on the far left, in the picture. He has a book out about the fight, as well as being involved in various stuff online, and tactical training - UNDER FIRE: Battle of the Black Sea

I'm hoping there's a link somewhere, to ask him about the grenades. [correction] - I found an addy, and sent an email, fingers crossed.
MSG Howe was kind enough to reply, and here it is:
"A flashbang on your magazine was the fastest way to retrieve one at that time."

Here's a pic of the Toy Soldier D-Boy Marksman gear set - for it's age I don't think it looks that bad.

He looks sharp, Dogzcogz. That sculpt works really well, I think. There's always the "weather/don't weather" debate, but the big pic of the five operators seems to indicate that their unis and gear are still pretty clean at the point it was taken.

btw, I spun the pic 90, and linked it from an album
Very nice dogzcogz. That head sculpt is was a good choice. I can't help but share my DBoy too.

Oh man, I was a BHD junky a few years back when the gear was mostly made by Toy Soldier and *SO* hard to find. That changed with the DAMToys series.
