It was suggested that I start a thread defining some of the millions of military acronyms out there. There are acronyms for acronyms out there so I expect some help troopers!

FRIES- Fast Rope Insertion/Extraction System

SOFLAM- Special Operations Forces Laser Marker

NVG- Night Vision Goggles

FLIR- Forward Looking Infrared

TACP- Tactical Air Control Party

ALO- Air Liason Officer

ROMAD- Radio Operator, Maintainer And Driver, Recon Observe Mark And Destroy, Rude Obnoxious Mean And Drunk

ETAC- Enlisted Terminal Attack Controller

CCT- Combat Control Team

AFSOC- Air Force Special Operations Command

USSOCOM- United States Special Operations Command

JSOC- Joint Special Operations Command

SWAT- Special Weapons And Tactics

SAW- Squad Automatic Weapon

SFOD-A, B, C, D- Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta

HRT-Hostage Rescue? Team
SRT-Special? Response Team
ERT-Emergency Response Team

Sorry if I don't know these for sure. These are the other variations of calling them a "SWAT" teams.

HALO-High Altitude-Low Opening
HAHO-High Altitidue-High Opening

JHP- Jacketed Hollow Point (also ammunition- not military sanctioned though I don't believe)

Yeah I had to do SERE up at Fairchild AFB back in December 98. Learned a lot of useful stuff there. I also had to do Water Survival and Dunker as well as some other SERE stuff that I won't get into.

Here's a really obscure one..............CHOM = College Hall Officer's Mess - the main officer's mess at the RAF college - my home 1980/81.

I suppose every military establishment has its own acronyms, but this one played a big part in my life all those years ago.


College Hall Officer's Mess, RAF College, Cranwell. The gardens in front in this picture have been a parade ground for many years - many an hour I spent there, I have less than fond memories of learning sword drill there in the rain!

BWLD - Big Watch, Little Dink

PBI - Poor Bloody Infantry

SOSR - Acronym for breaching obstacles:
Suppress forces covering breach site
Obscure area to be breached
Secure breach site
Reduce obstacle

FLIR - Forward Looking Infra Red

FMSO - Foreign Military Studies Office, formerly SASO (Soviet Army Studies Office)

Being that I am former Airborne...

OTF (Airborne guys will know this one) = Out There Flappin'

METT-T = Mission, Enemy, Terrain, Troops and equipment, and Time available

AAR = After Action Review

OPFOR = Opposing Forces

CP = Command Post

DZ = Drop Zone

AIR = Airborne Infantry Regiment ie. 3/325 AIR

PIR = Parachute Infantry Regiment ie. 2/504 PIR

BLUFOR = Other Friendly Forces

CO = Commanding Officer

FTX = Field Training Exercise

HE = High Explosive

HMMWV = High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle

HQ = Headquarters

LCE = Load Carrying Equipment

LBE = Load Bearing Equipment

SOP = Standard Operating Procedure

MOPP = Military Oriented Protective Posture

XO = Executive Officer

OP = Observation Post

QRF = Quick Reaction Force

Whew...!
