The key is to keep the tip from fraying. When the ends fray, it's near impossible to get the laces back through the grommetts. Using a lighter on the tip can sometimes remove the fray. If that don't work, you don't have a lighter handy, fabritac works well to glue the fray back together and mold it into a point. It dries pretty quick too.
