Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Is it a Dragon 4x4 truck? I sold a few of those kits before, 300 pieces, yeah, it's a ton of work, I know for sure I will not have the patience nor the skill, so never even thought about trying. Good luck man, hope to see it done soon!:applause
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Just thank whomever you deem responsible that they produced the kit at an affordable price so that we can have one........vast amount of work or not.......:wink
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

I can't encourage you enough. Dragon's 1/6 kits are fantastic for our hobby. First suggestion is to get an airbrush ( Paasche Type 3 is easy to use/clean and affordable.) Air compressors are on sale for $39.99 all the time at auto/hardware suppliers. Tamiya acrylics are easy to use/thin and clean up - windshield washer fluid works great ! File and sand off mould marks and seams. This is boring work but not rocket science and will improve the finish very much. Don't underestimate your abilities. I built aircraft models for forty years, got disgusted with the elitism in the hobby and switched to 1/6 collecting.
When the kits came out I started building again with the Schwimmwagen, then went on to a rebuild of a 21st jeep, Pak 40, a Dragon Pak 38 and then a Pz.II that I converted to an Ausf F with complete scratch built interior. Now I'm on a Sd.Kfz,250 and have two Shermans lined up. You can put whatever level of detail you want into these kits and they'll look great. You can go back at any time and add more if you wish. I look at these as if they will be 'works in progress' forever. Just lots and lots of fun and satisfaction at any level. These kits really put me back into building and it's all fun again.

Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Hello, I am currently working on the Dragon SAS Jeep kit. It is just awesome,Hank McCoy It is so much fun, and your rite their is alot i want to do to it to make it all mine. I would like to light it with LED's. Also I am not using the Guns but putting the wind screen up. Quik question, did you have a problem with the axel in the rear? the metal rod is still 1/4 of an inch out.
Also for now I am just putting it together and having fun, for the next one " yes the next one" I plan to do alot of stuff different. Here is what I have so far, it does'nt look like much but believe me it is alot. I was up untill 2:30 am.......ran out of glue. I think I did alot, UPS dropped it on my door at 2:54pm so Yup.

Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Good for you ! Although I have two 'built-up' Dragons, a 21st version and two Dragon kits, I haven't actually built a full jeep kit yet. I'm not surprised that you might need to replace the axle with something else. Frankly, I'm amazed at how the built up versions are so well assembled. Anyone who thinks that assembly line workers in China aren't skilled are very, very wrong. How they put these things together and paint them with no flaws amazes me. I'd suggest brass tubing from your local hobby shop if you need a longer axle. Aluminum tubing can be handy as well, for items that don't need so much strength but brass will be better for items like axles. Other tools that I recommend are a rotary motor tool with various bits and a reciprocating 'detail sander' ( the type that has a triangular head.) These appear on sale frequently as well. I am lucky enough to have a drill press as well. Power tools are NOT overkill for large scale models !
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

anybody building this kit recommend what colors to use. i plan on using tamiya
acryrlic paint.are you using the paint straight from the bottle or custom mixing
to get desired shade.i am talking about base body color
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Howlin' Matt Murdock and Hank McCoy -- OMG ( I don't believe I just used that !) are we nerds or what ? ( I am !) Seriously, over the years I've discovered that anybody's "true colours" are as unrealistic as the day, the year or the weather conditions. Olive Drab is Olive Drab, whatever you want it to be !
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

recommended add ons jerry cans from echobase toys as the kit only ten gas cans
there is rack storage for thirteen cans.
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Maybe you might not have been a modeler. But if you were, dealing with that scale should be easy.
Try doing battleships ,air craft carriers in small scale, aircraft. Come on now!
Patience.
Be happy you got and could afford your jeep.
All of this is just to give you confidence.
Good luck on your build, and post some pics also.
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Congrats on your project!

As Vince has said, the large number of components aside, ANY kit in sixth scale would be a good introduction to model building. Being military vehicles, an extra plus is a very easy paint scheme... olive drab, olive drab, or olive drab. Or, for the SAS version, desert sand.

For painting, you can't get too much easier than spray cans. Testors does a line specifically for models (avail in most hobby shops). You can find olive drab by Krylon at some auto parts / DIY stores, but that paint isn't specifically designed for model type plastic (polystyrene) and might be a little too "hot" for this application.

Enjoy learning a whole new aspect to the hobby!
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

I don't believe it comes with an engine.....so unless you plan to display it with the hood open, then no big deal.....IMHO
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Nope no engine. Also there was no directions for attaching the chassis to the body and not enough screws. But I got it. I have actually put 1:18 scale and 1:35 scale models together and had a blast. I helped an old man with the planes for his aircraft carrier. Wow that was fun.
Will post more pics tomorrow, when there is sun. :^_)
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

That's a great kit, man. Enjoy.
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

I agree a great kit of the jeep but sadly no engine with the kit and DML doesn't offer the engine as a separate detail item.
Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

i can't wait to see the finished ride! good luck Binx.

Re: Jeep Kit, OMG!

Hey y'all. So I finished my Jeep saturday, well almost. I hav'nt glued in the seats and can brackets yet. I want to get it painted first before I do the finishing touches. I plan to do a bash on how my Operaters came by the Jeep. I'm thinking Military surplus auction. Hence the wind screen.
What do you all think so far??
