The fact he's in white certainly suggests it ought to be snow... I saw that MB episode. Absolutely hilarious! Only thing troubling me then is, shouldn't the tops at least of the "snow shoes" be painted white --- to blend in WITH the snow? That brown suggests the dirty swampy water that the Myth is based on -- i.e. found in moats around castles?

I have to correct my previous post... the caption states that they (the water spiders) were intended for swampy ground, not water.

That's from Stephen Turnbull's Warriors of Medieval Japan, pages 165 and 183.
That makes more sense... Broad footprint means greater "flotation," just as in snow... Which begs the question were these ALSO used in snow, or, at least something like them?
