I felt the same way when I started ,wanting to hand sew everything.
But, go to Walmart, spend the few bucks for a sewing machine, a simple one, and just practice sewing anything together. As you get the hang if it (and lose the fear) you will never hand sew again.

hand sewings for chumps...listen to vince and get a machine...trust me..so much better...i can do a super hero suit in around 15 minutes from top to bottom...hand sewn would take a lot longer(ive done it all brother)..lol..
here's a sample of my machine sewn stuff..it's pretty close to actual store bought sewing..the seams are nice and tight..

Backstitch is pretty strong, it's really hard to undo compared to machine stitch. Machine stitch is much faster of course.
