Yes, I agree with the above mentioned dry-brushing to give that slight weathered effect.
One thing I have read and which I would agree with based on my own experience, is to avoid using grey or white when dry-brushing, as that tends to give more of the appearance of metal. It's better to use off-white or more warmer tones when trying to give the effect of leather. I found this to be the case even when the actual colour of the 'leather' boots in question WAS supposed to be black or grey, I painted the base coat as the main colour it was supposed to be, and then went over it with dry brushing in an off white colour. Hope that makes sense!
