Well this is my first major head repaint. I've dabbled before, but I thought I'd have a go on the Castlebrimstone technique of painting with pastels. http://www.onesixthwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70735&page=1&pp=30 It's sorta painting, mostly smearing around pastels. I started off with a basecoat that was too dark, so in person this head looks very dark. This bash, that I started in the Spring, is almost complete!

Should be done this weekend, adding another Mandalorian to the mix. I love this technique, don't know if I should call it a repaint or a repastel? Does anyone have a helpful technique for the small details? I used acrylic paint for the eyes and eyelids, but from the time the brush leaves the paint to the time it gets to the head it has already started to dry. Is this where oil paints come in handy?

I've tried oils on weapons, took a couple of weeks to dry. I wondered if the plastic had some kind of reaction with the paint to slow the drying time. I know oils take a while to dry, but two weeks for a light wash of thinned paint?

Ross, what about adding a retarder to the latex? When we do installs in Vegas in the summer I have to add retarder just to keep the paint from drying in the brush.

I'll look into this. I should probably start a thread asking this very question. How do the big boys, you know who you are, get such amazing detail in around the eyes? That subtle line between the pink of the eyelid, to the dark lash area, to the skin tone?

Boot25 and Tony Barton have painting with pastels tutorials over on the 6th Army Group boards. I also have a book for you to check out, it's in Japanese but has very detailed pictures.
