Cant wait to see what HT does with the Joker.
At first I was not liking this Joker at all. But, he is growing on me. What's the story with his make up?
I"m not sure about the makeup, but I believe he carves in the bigger smile IIRC.

drawing from old memory here but wasnt the reason teh Joker went ballistic/got that face from a gas-related accident that bleached his face permanently white and dyed his hair green? I honestly cant remember. TO WIKIPEDIA.

The first origin account, Detective Comics #168 (February 1951), revealed that the Joker had once been a criminal known as the Red Hood. In the story, a scientist looking to steal from the company that employs him adopts the persona of Red Hood. After committing the theft, Red Hood is dropped into a vat of chemical waste by Batman. He emerges with white skin, green hair, and a bizarre grin.

Sol_Siruken, I was pretty sure I new the back story, but not all the details. Thanks for posting what you found.
I should have been more clear with my question. I was wondering why this direction with the make up. It looks more sloppy then scary. If he cut himself a bigger grin, well thats a horse of a different color.

Basically the Joker paints his face and lets the make up rot on it. Though Nolan has said that the Joker is more than meets the eye.
Until they faithfully execute Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, I figure everything else will be the same old Hollywood stool samples.....
A faithful version of DKR is not what the series needs right now. Maybe in the future, but not now.
