what is being done about the spam posts other than the admins removing them? i wonder as they show up daily even with the admins trying to keep a lid on things. so, is something going to be done? perhaps we need to let Jim know about this?

But please feel free to let Jim D know. He's already been informed, and it is Christmas (whose timing was that?), but "the more you know...".

We need a policy here. I suspect that any replies to such a thread, even sarcastic ones, or communications about reporting it, only feed the spam-bots and make recurrence likelier.

PUTTING ON MY CAPT. OBVIOUS HAT . . .

WHAT TO DO WHEN WE SEE A SEXUAL SPAM THREAD IN GENERAL DISCUSSION OR ELSEWHERE

1. GASP!

2. DO NOT post a reply within such a thread.

2. Copy the URL for the thread.

3. Send a PM to one of the admins with the message's title as SPAM THREAD and post the URL for the spam thread in the PM with the message "Thread is a sexual spam thread within in the General Discussion section (or whatever section it is in). Please delete/remove it. Thank you."

4. Wait accordingly to allow time for the said admin to receive the PM, read the PM, and take action on the PM.

5. You've done your part.

So there.

I've suggested this before. How about we set up a Sticky Thread, loosely monitored by the Admins, where the urls of Spam Threads could be reported?

Easier way to let the admins know about spam posts is to use the "Report Post" function in the lower-LEFT corner of every post (the exclamation point in the triangle). The way most of these forums work, the report goes to all admins automagically. I've been doing this since the spam started popping up after the forum upgrade.

From experience, replying to spam threads has no effect on the spammers. Most spammers never show up again after their initial volley of posts. They know full well that they'll get kicked off. The worst thing you can do is click any of the links or actually patronize what they're spamming.

Replying to spam threads instead of reporting them dies tend to annoy forum admins, though...

Spamming vbulletin is pretty much entirely automated with bots. Pretty easy to mitigate with plugins, turning on captchas/manual approval for registration and some tweaking at the server level with something fairly basic like this.

A good idea with useful info, thanks. I was unaware of the triangle. Then again it's becoming more relevant than it used to be, especially when it's these totally out of context spams (not just some member selling in the general area or something)...

Not that this means anything, but . . .

There is/was a porn spam thread today.

I reported it using the Report Post icon (i.e. triangle with exclamation point) on the lower left corner.

My message was simply.

"Porn spam thread. Please delete. Thank you."

An hour or so later, the thread is gone.
