I was bored one night and noticed a brown paper bag sitting. Out came the blade and some glue.

Fantastic!

Can you post a tutorial?
Here you go (pic heavy):

Measure out two squares with a thin tab.

Fold the tab.

Glue along the tab. I use a dab of wood glue and spread it with my finger.

Glue together to form a tube.

Flatten it out.

Fold the sides on both sides.

Fold the sides inward.

I don't draw lines on, I just mark with my fingernail. Mark the line for what will be the bottom of the bag.

Fold it back and forth.

Fold in the corners at roughly 45° angles until they look like this:

Glue the tab over

Fold the bottom of the bag back and forth to crease it and et voilĂ

Very nice shopping bag. Paper bags didn't have handles, where shopping bags did have handles and were a lot bigger. Paper bags like I stated came in several sizes small medium and large. Another thing about shopping bags is they are made out of a thicker paper compared to regular grocery store paper bags. Most shopping bags I saw back then had a round twisted handle all though some did have flat handles

Be sure to make the handle just too small to get all four fingers in ;)
Great work there, I imagine you could print a template out and add logos etc too

I tried that method also a few years ago but could not get the consistency by eyeball and measuring.

I also tried using thin brown paper (from smaller bags of course) and running them through a laser printer to put some marker lines for folding.
That worked to an extent, but the grain would not always line up well in the final product.

Next, I just printed a brown shade on plain copier paper using a laser printer and ended up with what I thought was a reasonable result. The inside is white, but from the outside, they look pretty good.
I suppose it is also possible to print brown on the inside as well, but that seemed to be too much work at the time.

Here is the pattern that I uploaded a while back:

I should have also posted a photograph of the result.

One other method if you really need to work with brown paper is to make a wooden block of the right size to use for forming the bag. I tried that also, but I could never get the creases quite as nice as I could with the printer paper.

I wish I knew where that wooden block ended up.

Another thing that helps a little with realism is to use "corrugated" shears to cut the top edge. It leaves a slight pattern that is not quite in scale for the edge but looks better than a plain even cut.

Someone should move this thread to the proper area where it can be found later. Otherwise it will get drowned by all the other traffic in the general area.
