Bizarre eBay Experience, Story #568

Bought an item at auction from seller "pinkpanter30003." A few days later, he refunded my money, telling me that the item had been destroyed in a flood. He mentioned that he was listing a similar item and hoped I'd bid on it. It was the exact same generic equipment set at the exact same price that I'd bought it.
I'm assuming that the seller wanted to "redo the auction" be because I was the only bidder and got it for the minimum bid, but I can't be certain. Weird either way.

I think I know what figure you bided on. Was it a Old BBI Figure...

It was a handful of pouches from the SS PJ Type B. It wasn't even a $10 auction, which is why I went "huh" when I saw the "new" auction.
That is why a seller should put a minimum price he will sell it for.(forget what it is called!)
The item did not reach the minimum, so he pulled it and hoped to get more bidders and a bidding war started.
Bid again and see if you "win" it. If he pulls it again, report him.
i had similar experience twice recently. bought a kotobukiya dead space 3 isaac clark from a seller in japan. the seller refunded and told me it wasnt in stock. so i tried a second seller in japan. he responded with the same response about it being sold out and refunded me. wtf?

I think you are referring to a "Reserve Price".
Interesting.

Normally a seller can set a minimum reserve price if that is what they want to make. But if he didn't do that, then he should honour the auction end price.

I guess if he did refund the money, it's just the inconvenience of doing it all again. That is if you want to try the seller again.

I wonder what will happen with my package coming from that seller. The Glock set from the DAMTOYS Ghost SOF Ryder Watson figure.
I think you are referring to a "Reserve Price".
Minimum Price and Reserve Price formats both exist as different variations of the auction format. Minimum Price is just what it sounds like: Bids start at a shown minimum like $100. You can't bid less than $100. If no one bids $100+ the item is unsold. Otherwise the highest bid above $100 takes it.

Reserve Price is a psychologically manipulative variation. Because people are put off from bidding if they see too high a "Minimum" the amount can be hidden. In this case the system accepts bids below $100 but those bidders are really just wasting their time until it gets past $100, and then above $100 it goes to the highest bidder. Not quite sure which format Vince was referring to.

Reserve price used to be a big thing in the early days of Ebay, but I dont really see many people using it anymore. Its a gimmick, really.
There's no shortage of creeps on eBay.

I had someone today on eBay go from zero to dic_head in about five seconds, accusing me of having an incorrect description. He sent about half a dozen messages to tell me how wrong the listing was in broken, sub-normal English.

I can tell you I'm pretty bloody careful about the way things are listed and described, with photographs as documentary evidence so people know exactly what they are looking at, and where it's from.
Hell, I even include the appropriate elements of the manufacturers' parts lists.

I'm perfectly happy to answer innocent questions regarding how big something is, or if it's real, is it airsoft, etc.
However, I have a pretty low level of patience for gits that lack basic skills of comprehension.
How does one get through life when so dense?
Your teachers should be shot for letting you leave school with such a basic understanding of English, and the ability to write or read clearly.
If you accuse me of being wrong when you're clearly stupid, prepare to get shut down.

eBay are fortunate I use them as a conduit for sales at all. Sorry for the rant.

So true but as well lots of great folks to deal with as well, its a shame some individuals ruin the experience. There seem to be one or two Malaysian sellers popping up under multiple accounts over the last few months which struck me as odd, though the ebay seller restrictions for new accounts can be restrictive.

Auctions drive me nuts as a good percentage of the time it's shill bid, the seller refuses to ship items as in this case or they game the shipping charges. First time I've heard of a flood being blamed, points for originality at least and you do want to give someone the benefit of the doubt...till the same item is relisted.. :doh
doesnt beat the time i was bidding on a hot toys helmet, lost the auction, then was extended a second chance !?!.

Ignored the second chance and the seller relisted the item, bid on it, lost it again..... and i was given another second chance offer ?!!

Something sneaky right there.

You're right, Adam, there are plenty of people on eBay that are perfectly OK and are a pleasure to deal with.
It's the 0.1% which aren't that are the problem.

As for the somewhat strange Malaysians sharing photographs between numerous sellers, most of them have been perfectly all right over the last few years.
Their listings look a bit fishy, but in my experience have always proved to provide kosher items at bargain prices.
pulling auctions like this stinks. i won something from a guy in france at a stupid low price and then (surprise!) he couldn't find it in his stock.

while i get that people might have a lot of stock and lose things or can't keep track of them, i don't think people actually post auctions (with pictures!) of things they don't know if they really have.

very silly.
A somewhat similar experience I've had was with a Bradley. Seller listed it for like $25.00 and I put a bid in - the item was listed as in good condition. Won the auction and got an email about 10 minutes after I paid for it saying that his "workers" broke it during packing and he would refund my money. My suspicion is that someone contacted him privately and either offered more or told him how much it was really worth.
Tagged him as a bad seller in my files and have never dealt with him again.
or maybe there was really a flood?

For example: the weather in western Europe has been crazy these past few weeks.
Nope. pinkpanther is in Malaysia,
On the other hand, there have been floods recently in areas of Malaysia, but not like in the past week. who knows, maybe its the truth.

You should say " I take it anyway" he probably say he threw it in the trash.

Don't get me wrong - that was a possibility I'd considered. However, he relisted the exact same parts I'd just bought. If the same parts that I bought were destroyed in a flood, why not send me the same parts instead of canceling and relisting?
Just to put a positive pro-seller story out there -- a few years ago, an EBay seller whom I had met in person at local toy shows put up a 1/4 scale Diamond Select Captain Kirk for normal auction, no minimum bid. At that time these were getting @ $100 in local stores. I wasn't looking for one, but I was buying other stuff from the same guy, so I was scanning through all his auctions for any bargains that could be included in the same shipment. I bid something like $25 but since no one else had bid yet, EBay was showing me as a $5 bid. And for some fluke no one else ever bid on it, so I won it for $5. I sent the seller an email volunteering that $5 was ridiculous and could we agree to a fair price, but he wouldn't hear of it and only charged me the $5.

The creeps get more attention, but there's plenty of super-good guys on EBay too.
