best vietnam era figure?

1385 Views 13 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  jon math
i initially got into 1/6 kits because of HT's aliens and predator stuff, but i've always been a big fan of military history, and have been reading a lot of books about vietnam as of late. and since this hobby is largely based on the military, i'm thinking about starting a small collection.

so what kit, in your opinion, is the best vietnam era figure?

Try looking for some of Toy Soldier Vietnam sets. Ken Miller is excellent, if you can find it...

My humble suggestion: Hot Toys Tiger striped flightsuited F-4 Phantom driver :thumb
HT Nam SEAL w/ Stoner & 21st Century MACV/SOG 'One-Zero'
Definiately Dragon M60 Gunner if you can find it but I do prefer anything HT or TS
If you're wanting a regular grunt or an SF guy, there's also the route of bashing up your own -
Toy Soldier
_OG107 Tropical Combat Uniform set (includes boonie hat and jungle boots)
_M1956 Web Gear set
_M1 Helmet with Mitchell Pattern Cover
_M69 Body Armor
_Tiger Stripe uniform

Saturday Toys
_Tiger Stripe uniform

ReloadAction
_Tiger Stripe uniform

ACE
_Jungle boots

Newline
_Jungle boots

Some of the above is readily available, some might take some digging. After that, it's a matter of finding weapons, particularly M16A1s (DML, SOTW). The M60 machine gun (DML, HotToys), M79 grenade launcher (DML, SOTW), CAR15 (DML, SOTW, Zacca?), M14 (DML, HT, 21C) and M72 LAW (21C, HotToys) have all been made. 21C also did some early weapons sets which are very crude, and some later carded VN wpns sets which are quite good.
Packs and rucks are a matter of scrounging, unless you grab a figure that came with one (TS and HT), or score older 21C (Ultimate Soldier) versions.

Like recent unifoms and webgear, I believe that other "wanted" items will start showing up, down the road.

1) Hot Toys SEAL Stoner gunner (some dealers still have it).
2) Hot Toys SEAL M60 gunner (some dealers still have it).
3) Toy Soldier Kenn Miller LRRP figure (can still be found on Ebay).
4) Toy Soldier Mike force figure(see if you can find it on Ebay).
5) Toy Soldier SEAL Pointman figure (see if you can find it on Ebay).
6) Sideshow Platoon figues (can still be found on Ebay although prices are rising). Also, if you pick up any of the Platoon figures I would recommend upgrading the web gear and boots with the Toy Soldier M56 set and toy Soldier boots(ACE also makes jungle boots).
Toy Soldier have just about all you need with the tropical combat uniform, M1956 webbing and M1 helmet to bash a basically equipped grunt - only one catch - NO M-16!! :(

It would be great if someone made the Vietnam-era M-16 available in a few versions - Air Force models with no forward assist, versions with 3-prong and the later birdcage flash hider, etc... A Colt Model 607 carbine(as used by SEALs) would be nice too. :)
I have nearly all Sideshow platoon figures and am upgrading them with the TS webgear and newline jungle boots. But if you're willing to settle for a generic character I'd go for the Toy Soldier stuff.
I always liked DML's Green Beret. There's one sitting on my retailer's back shelf right now, sadly it's reserved and even sadder, the guy hasn't been in yet to pick it up so it sits there tormenting me. I'd snap it up in a heartbeat if they offered it to me, but something tells me they won't.

I made the mine.

I used TS, HT, bbi, Dragon and DID pieces to mount my pictures.

The last picture shows the SEAL of HT
