Great, that answers my question completely.
I removed the sling!

Now were did that tutorial on weathering the stock go...
(Seriously, I can't find it anymore, it was a tutorial where you scratched the "wooden" parts and sandpaperd it.)

.....das soldat jumped right into painting, and has become quite the talent.
Thanks PD. I'm lucky I can even paint. I'm legally blind in both eyes, and my glasses are very thick to compensate.

And yes, repainting the rifle is very quick and simple. You just need to look out the the metal parts, which should be painted over anyways. I just use the sandpaper and give it a brown wash then paint the metal parts. In about 5-10 minutes, my results are great.








I used a similer process on the MG42, but by layering coats of spray paint on the metal (black then gunmetal) and the wodden parts (Light brown then dark brown)
