Applying Mud to Vietnam Jungle Boots

I'm currently working on some weathering for some Nam figures and was looking for some insight/direction. To date I've only ever found one video on YouTube of a gentleman applying weathering/mud effects to his soldier's boots. What he used was more of a thin wash. I'm actually thinking of using a combination of a wash in some areas and an actual thick mud consistency in other areas. I've acquired some Citadel texture paints that I thought would aid me in this process. I was hoping there were still some users lurking around this website that could give me some pointers or give me some links to vids/tutorials. Most of the mud tutorials I've found thus far are for bases for Warhammer figurines.
