This is something I tried with a jeep I recently made. I wanted a look that said "I've been useed and abused." So I bought some rust colored paint and put it arround the bottom edges of everything and a little in corners (where you put it is up to you) Then I got some flat Enamel Military Brown paint. It was a little lighter than normal brown. I poold some in the lid of the container and dipped my brush into water, then in the paint. This thinned it out a bit. I painted it on, lightly, a section and then before it dried wipped it of with a rag. This smeared it and made it look less brushed on. After applying paint everywhere I wanted to look like mud splatters, I sprayed a ver light coat of a spry on adheisive and sprinkled dirt over that. Blow off all the exess dirt and fix it on their with a dull coat spry. Finnished result looks a little like this:
