The Troupes de marine, are an arm of the French Army with naval heritage. The Troupes de marine are dedicated to service overseas. Despite their title they have been a part of the Army since 1967.

Soldiers of the troupes de marine are likely to spend much more of their service overseas, particularly in Africa, than other French soldiers. The troupes de marine include infantry (including light tank units and airborne units) and artillery, with amphibious or airborne specializations.

Another cool one to add to your International Warriors collection.

You're unstoppable. Like a 1/6 world ambassador.

That one guy looks like he's rappelling out of my grandparent's house. :lol

Troupes de Marine

IIRC, from a lecture I attended at Sandhurst "a few years ago," the Troupes de Marine have been part of the army just a bit longer than indicated above. The lecture concerned the history of the campaign in 1895 which consolidated French control over the entire island of Madagascar; France had invaded Madagascar originally in 1883 and secured a half-million Franc payment and the northern coast as a settlement from the native ruler to end the fighting --- that time. The Troupes de Marine figured prominently in both campaigns.

The Troupes de Marine were formed in 1622 as the Compagnies Ordinaires de la Mer, as land troops under the navy's control. Their primary service was in French Canada. They became a part of the army, as noted "despite the name," shortly after the Madagascar campaign, in 1900, and became the Troupes Coloniales (i.e. "Colonial Troops"). With France losing its colonies post-WW2, the title Troupes d'Outre-Mer (Overseas Forces) was used for a brief period (1958-61), until Troupes de Marine was readopted in 1961.

They are a major component in France's Forces d'Intervention because they have never been subject to the restrictions on overseas deployment that plague the French "Metropolitan" troops... The French use them in Africa, as already noted, and they also formed a significant part of the 6th Light Armored Division, along with French Foreign Legion troops, in 1990/91 in Saudi Arabia & Iraq. Initially, the French operated independently but then, in January, the Division was placed under the tactical control of the US XVIII Airborne Corps... ;) Cheers!

Oh, and great work!!!!!! :thumb

Very nice fig! I'm always glad - and surprised too - each time I see figs related to French forces made by foreign onsixers. When I started 1/6 hobby, I thought that most of French military kitbash would deal with Napoleonic wars or the Foreign Legion. I'm happilly surprised to see bashes like this one, and also very glad to read historic statement like yours.

I confirm that the Troupes de Marines are administrated by the Army. In a few words we can say that they are infantrymen carried by ships. In the French military, a symbol of the corps you belong to is sewed on the shoulder ranks : bird of prey for the Air Force, a buggle for Chasseurs, a kind of Roman Armor for engineer regiments (Génie), an anchor for the Navy (Marine Nationale, officers only), etc. I don't know each of them sorry! The symbol for the Troupes de Marine is the Navy anchor but you can see that they belong to the Army because they have Army rank insignas. If you compare, Navy Commandos (Commandos de Marines) have Navy ranks because they are part of the Navy. In the Air Force, we've got a similar corps - regarding administration and insignas : the Air Engineer Corps (Génie de l'Air). They are engineers doing building work on an air base regarding runways, taxiways, main military facilities (especially at war or overseas because there are civil contractors for metropolitan facilities). They are Army men with Army ranks, but on their shoulder ranks features the Air Force symbol (the bird) and are settled on some air bases.

Congrats for your cool figure! :thumb
