Tandy- Half Pint Roper Mini Saddle - Project (Printable plans added)

I am taking this subject out of my Simple Cowboy No. 7
thread and giving it it's own.

It does, however, look even harder than making one from scratch

I took the seat part and put it on a Sindy horse which is the same size as a Marx and it looks like a pretty good fit. The best thing about this set is that it comes with a complete set of patterns. I'll have to see if I can scan them though it may be a tad tricky as they are on a three foot by eight inch piece of paper and the patterns overlap. But I'll figure it out. I'll also get some shots of all the pieces and maybe even put a tutorial together.
I will not be attempting the carving part though. I'll just use some leather stamps to put a simple pattern around the edges.

Here's the seat part on the Sindy horse:

So, you're pretty convinced this is going to turn out to be 1:6 scale? It certainly looks like it, but there's nothing in the description I read to suggest that.

But, yes, I think it is our scale. It's designed as a project for leather workers and meant as an ornament, I think it's sheer chance that it fits.

Anyway, here's where I am right now - still a ways to go though.

    To be continued.......

It's looking really good...but it's not 1/6. - I'm no expert on western saddles but I'm pretty sure the seat shouldn't spread over onto the hindquarters.
If you used a larger horse you might get away with it though!

    Thanks
It's just the skirt that's a little big and I plan on trimming that down, I think the seat itself is okay. Like I said before, this was not specifically designed for a model horse rather as a desktop ornament.
Don't worry I'll make it work and when I make one just using the patterns I'll know what adjustments to make.

I think this saddle would fit a Dragon German Cavalry hose pretty well.

One could trace outlines of the pieces and make more saddles for their own use. Tandy sells a great selection of leather in many thicknesses. They also sell some very thin leather that could be used for rifle slings, and helmet chin straps etc.

Probably, in fact I think it could fit most one sixth horses. But seeing as I just bought five of these Sindy Horses I better make it work

I'm going to make copies of all the pieces on to stiff card and then I make as many as I want
I've found all types of leather in the Leathercraft section on eBay and at very reasonable prices also lots of cool leather working tools. The one thing I am having trouble finding is suitable buckles. I know Stevo has some but ordering from him just takes too long and Rio Rondo are all sold out of the larger ones.

    ******************

Anyhow, here's where I'm at now. I still have to make some rigging and a bridal, also a canteen, rifle boot and some saddle bags but that stuff is relatively easy.

    That's turning out mighty well.

What are you using to color the leather?

I use Fiebing's leather dye and then I use a blend of acrylic burnt sienna and enamel matt black to give it a more aged look.

Beautiful work, Nigel. You did a great job, as usual. If I just had room for horses, your work is inspiring.

Here's the second saddle I've made using these plans, soon to be seen with Simple Cowboy No. 9.

Here are some printable templates and full instructions.

Very nice saddles. I would omit the rear strap on the saddle. They use a strap there to make the horse buck. Watch some rodeo videos and you will see the strap used to make them buck. Also the main strap used to secure the saddle to the horse(belly band) is not leather but made of cloth or fabric belting and should be further back on the saddle under the stirrup sections

They are very, very nice - especially the latest one - but definitely way too big for the horses. If you resized the pattern a bit they'd be perfect!
Sized correctly the rear strap would be level where the back of the stirrup is now.
