I will be in L.A. next week (Santa Monica) for a business trip and will most likely have a couple of hours on Saturday for some 1/6 shopping.
I'm into HT and other movie related figures and customs. Is either Frank & Sons (Saturday) or Echobase Toys worth a visit (both would be a one hour drive approx.)
Echobase is great. Like toysrus for 1:6. Make sure they are open though by calling them and inquiring about store hours. They are often at trade shows.
Frank and sons is cool. Kind of like a big swap meet with lots of 1:6 stuff.
Frank and Sons is HUGE! but for the 1/6 world, it's expensive. if you're looking for toys that aren't 1/6 related though, this place is a mall of toys. so many toys.
Echobase is a small store but it's all 1/6 and stocks oh so much of it. prices are very reasonable and they have so many bins filled with loose parts.
This info is dated by a couple of years but I imagine its still applicable*
A few minor tips as someone who visited LA once and made the pilgrimage to EBT, make a list beforehand of what you're looking for, look it up on the website and definitely call them beforehand to see what they have and could have.
When I visited they had a lot of current stuff but also a lot of older goodies for great prices and afaik the displays were for sale.
If you have loose stuff in mind, which I recommend you could look up on their website, make a list with the call numbers--or better yet call them before you place the order so you can arrange to pick it up and they can have time to retrieve it all.
Frank and Sons was fun to walk around and gawk at the various toys and games and its fun to get a feel of the area when you drive to its area--City of Industry?
When I was there in early 2012 it looked like there were two movie themed dealers selling figures and customs that you'd find on the SSF forum. They were very very expensive though.
Azteca and PBT wasn't there that weekend so I missed them much to my dismay ._x
No idea what the current offerings are but there was someone with every single UFC Round 5 figurine there (the kind Zebraten uses so effectively for customs) but I don't know if hes still there.
If you find yourself near downtown LA and have other free time, Little Tokyo is very cool to visit and there's a lot of great food. Also in the mall (if it's still there) was a cool little anime/manga store chock full of toys and some misc Medicom and a couple other figures. Not really a 1/6 destination but if you have time
One more thing, plan to travel not at rush hour. It can be brutal. You don't want to waste time sitting in hour(s)long traffic. I was lucky and scooted around on off-peak hours.
Yep Echo Base would be the place to check out figs. Frank and Sons is a huge layout.
If you have time, little tokyo in downtown L.A. BOOKS KINOKUNIYA Homepage
They have a ton of Anime books and figures, also Anime Jungle
I live in the D.C. area, and own a rental home in the LA area. I make sure I go to Echobase whenever I visit the rental. It'a a real treat for some otherwise painful visits!
