1:6 At The Recruiting Station (Business Expanded...?)

Moment of hilarity for me today during my seventy-two hour indoc. By request, I brought in a bit of 1:6 (my recruiter collects McFarlane's, so he and I hit it off on that). I brought in that Neptune's Spear SEAL I customized and they loved it. They even called in a Marine Reservist to check him out (intel pukes unite!), though I had to explain to the good Marine why he had a beard and the difference between MAPRAT Desert and AOR-1.
Anyway, that moment made my day, even more than acing my PSQ's (even nailed the question about what the effective range on a 240 Bravo.) OSW - it opens doors.

Most of my family is Navy, with the exception of 3 Marines. I'm thinking regular Marine infantry. Me and my cousin were planning to enlist in the Marines at the same time when were 18 or somewhere around there. Best of luck to you CC.

Hey, CC, be careful. I knew a Navy cook (Culinary Specialist) who ended up running convoys in 'Stan. He eventually became the 'chef' in our firebase.
Have you picked a Rating (MOS) yet? If not, do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions before you commit to anything. Remember, Navy is the most well-rounded branch of all the services, plenty of opportunities to choose from.
Good luck and enjoy Bootcamp- probably the easiest time you'll ever have in your Navy career.

Re: 1:6 At The Recruiting Station

Just a quick update - my recruiter's 1:6 Riverine's progressing nicely and I'm going to start bringing some 1:6 to the office regularly. Apparently, other servicemen have been asking about where they can get their own figures, so these will be a demo/form of advertising. I'm going to start sourcing parts for the other petty officer's VBSS, then I'll start figuring out if I need to expand or just start giving out info for how people can source their own. I'll need to figure out how much is needed before committing though - I've got enough projects on my plate

Yep, I made sure to read up before going to MEPS. As it is, I'm IS (intel). They wanted me to go Nuke based on my ASVAB's, but my brother went that route and a few things had me concerned, so I asked for (and got) my first choice.

Remember one thing. You can put in for all the schools you want, but you will only get an opening in that school if there is a need for that MOS. ( for a rating in the Navy).
Even if you are promised a class, you have to wait till there is an opening and you will wait for it in the fleet or on a base.(doing details on base or on ship, painting, cleaning, mess duty).
When you get your class,if you fail the class, it is out to the fleet, painting, cleaning, mess cooking.
This how it was in the 1970's U.S. Navy.

Very nice! I've seen a few Aviation DEP'ers at the station, it's a pretty strong field.

That's the same today. My brother had to wait a few weeks before getting into the nuke program and then a few more after he finished his a-school because of some confusion over who had the authority to give him his orders. I'm not too worried about that though - it's just details.
If for some reason I do end up failing my a-school, they're probably going to send me to another a-school as opposed to sending me up as an unassigned seaman, given my qualifications. That's not likely to happen though - I'm good at school and I'm more than happy to work hard

The legend is true- Azteca & Point Blank Toys give military discount! Also if you're lucky to stop by at the right time, he's having the usual BBQ gig in his backyard. Where else can you go and get double bang of discount and Carne Asada with all the trimmings?

    @CC-
Congratulations! IS is a very good rating and highly in-demand with large sign-up bonuses (the most important perks of all).

Do not fail your A School! There's NO guarantee you'll get another school, especially with the current manpower demands. If you fail, your ASVAB or other qualifications won't matter since you will be placed in one bin with other flunkies and they will look at you as just another 'body' to fill up numbers for the fleet. BUDS failures suffer the same fate- they get assigned to ships, or worse: Gators (Amphibious Assault Ship), the bastard son of the Navy-all work, all deployments, all guts, no glory.
Another thing, if you finished school among the top 2 students, you'll have a chance to pick a unit that you like. I was at NSW for three years and one of the new IS got orders there for being a top student. Working with the SEAL teams is quite difficult, but a little better than being on a ship. So, you've been warned. Do not fail your A School! TOP IT!

I work with IS folks quite often (as a Combat Cameraman) doing intel and 'snoopie' ops. We have a running joke about us cameramen getting real-time images direct from location, sending them to the ISs to be analyzed in their air-conditioned room, then the ISs end up getting all the medals while we get some more assignments! It's all good!

Regarding the medals, ain't that the truth?
Trust me when I say I have NO intention of failing my a-school. My brother washed out of nukes and got lucky when they assigned him to GSE. His experience is the reason why I said no to nukes, even with my ASVAB score (Venivicivinci's reaction to my GT score made my day - hilarious!) I knew that if I failed the a-school for nukes that I would not get a say in what my new rating would be. Better to pick something I knew I could do and would love than to shoot for the moon and fall on my butt. I already overanalyze everything and try to learn as much as I can, so I thought, why not intel?
There was no signing bonus, but I do get to make E3 off the bat because of my degree and the rating comes with a TS clearance (assuming I pass the SSI).
This is going to be an interesting experience in any case - even if I don't like it - and I plan to make the most of this, in and out of the service. If it's any indication of my long-term plans, my GF and I are talking about scenarios where I put in twenty or so years.

@CC Great! As an E3 coming out of bootcamp, you'll have a good chance of becoming E-4 (Petty Officer 3rd Class) after finishing A School. Several ISs I know from my old unit got their first chevron after graduation from school, not a bad way to advance quickly.

Sorry to hear about not getting a sign-up bonus- sometimes those things are periodic. The reenlistment bonus though is almost a given for ISs.

It still needs some fine-tuning, including a rigger's belt and a SERPA holster, but it's 90% done. He wore an MTV back then - they didn't get gucci gear like the CIRAS until after he'd returned to the U.S.

When I was an nco in the army and teaching a class on the 3.5 rocket launcher(bazooka to our neighbors to the south) I had brought in a model of a tank. The RSM asked why I had brought in the "toy" tank and I responded as a teaching aide. he dropped in to monitor my class and saw how I used it. I pointed out to the class aiming points on the model which explained to them better than saying hit here or there vocally without the traing aid. After the class the RSM said "well done Jonesy, that's useing your old noggin' for more than a hat rack"
