1/6 Berserk Guts custom figure WIP - from Sword of Berserk

My next project is 1/6 Berserk Guts from Sword of Berserk - my favorite fantasy/gore/horror Manga/Anime. It's been running for about 20 years (and still going..)
I'm gonna make 2 figures from the series. One is 'Black Knight' version (before the main character gets Berserker armor) and the 2nd one is 'Berserker armor' version
This is WIP for the 'Black Knight' version.
For this one, I'm gonna use Dragon's 12" figure for most of armor parts and Hot toy's new muscular body as a base.

First, I got lazy and modified the HT head to get the facial expression I want (instead of new head sculpt..). If I don't like it, I'll go back and make a new head sculpt..
This one, I'm trying to get more realistic feel.
I shaved the hair and carved out the mouth, and put the teeth in for the test. It looks like it can work.

Also saving the Anime head came with Dragon, but adding joint for head joint (shape will be modified later)

This is armor fitting test. Most armor parts can be used without too much effort! Left side mechanical arm and shoulder armor need some modification to fit better. Also some shapes of leather parts need some tweaks as well.
IMO, already looking much better than old Dragon version!!!

Nice...perfect body for that, armor set looks great now. Good manga, if a little disturbing at times.

I'd personally totally re-do all the leather work, but leather is something I have gotten pretty comfortable working with. The leather on the figure is fake leather right? Could use real leather and get a better look imo. I'd suggest using undyed leather and dying it yourself. You end up with a more rustic look that way.

It's a great idea and I agree totally. However, I've never dealt with leather yet (like i said, a newbie in 1/6th..) It would be great if you can direct me to any good reference on 'how to do's or 'what to buy' (material and tool-wise)

Re: 1/6 Berserk Guts custom figure WIP - from Sword of Berserk

To fit the left mechanical arm, I had to cut off a portion of base body arm..
The HT muscular body arm is slightly thicker than Dragon's arm, so I had to extend out the metal frame to fit it.

Trying the Dragon's original head. That need some work.. but that's low priority for now.

And this is another test shot with new head.

Quick pose shot with his sword.. Man.. without hair and face paint, he looks like Charlton Heston!

I'm sure you can figure it out

I buy my leather from Rio Rondo. Also my dyes and stuff.

    http://www.riorondo.com/

I don't have any good tutorials on working with leather but it's basically just normal sewing for the most part but I find it easier due to being stiffer. You can also wet mold the tooling leather to do fitted sheaths and holsters.

A couple wet molded examples of stuff I have done. I usually use a back stitch for the sewn parts. A bridle stitch would probably be better but I don't have the patience for it.

Gave him some hair. Now looks less like Charlton Heston and more like Guts!
That hair took me all day! Anime hair is hard to do!

Another shot with his bad-a*s sword!!

Well.. now that holidays are gone and work begins..Also need to wait for materials and tools for leather parts. - meaning slow progress for a while..

Amazing modification! You really enhanced the original figure! Are you going to swap the boots to real leather ones? That will allow better poses.

maybe jack sparrow boots or captain america? And I think Guts is more muscular like an ACI body, just my opinion, looking great none the less!

The problem with that I gather is that there's no way the armor and clothing made to fit a Dragon body would fit one of the larger muscular bodies.

Yup. that's part of the plan. Either I get a new boots for him or cut off the boots neck and do leather work on top parts since I'm doing some leather work anyways now. However, most of the boots will be covered by armor in the end :P

Cap. America boots don't move much. Probably worse than Dragon's in pose-ability. Jack's boots..very soft and great pose-ability, but too pointy IMO .
The chest armor barely fits the HT body. Anything bigger will be a major problem. I'm planning to deepen the arm muscles a little bit here and there. Anything flexible on body parts can't be touched much.

maybe you can use did German jackboots. black but you could always repaint them.

but if real leather instead of pleather is what you want you could use the civil war officers boots that newline miniatures makes. they like nice. They're also black but you could repaint them. the newline jackboots are a bit to rough and thick for my liking. also big soles adds some height to any fig that wears them.

That's really cool! Berserk is also one of my favourite manga. But I stopped reading it years ago, right at the part where Guts acquired his new magic wolf armour( I forgot what it's called..).

nice update on this figure. I have one sitting in a box somewhere because it just didn't look good enough to display due to the body, might have to try customizing mine now.
