    Northern Ireland Fire Brigade~ 1981

Hi Folks, Here is my little tribute to the unsung heroes of the Northern Ireland fire brigade.

During the worst days of Northern Ireland's turbulant past, one band of men stood between warring factions on a daily basis, often taking the brunt of both sides as they vented their anger on anyone in an authoritarian role, as they saw it.

    The Northern Ireland Fire Brigade.

The Brigade wore a uniform, so they were unfortunately seen as, "fair game".
During the intense bombing campaign of the late 1970's and 1980's, many firemen were severely injured, and in some cases killed by secondary devices.
These devices were designed to kill members of the security forces, as they checked the scene of the initial blast.
Unfortunately the Firemen were usually still dealing with the fire from the blast, when the secondary exploded.

I have tried to depict two members of the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade,....with the Leading Firefighter lending a helping hand to his friend, who has been caught in such a device, and has suffered facial injuries.
The Leading Fire Fighter clears a path, and escorts him from the scene.
I Hope you enjoy my little dio.

My December KOTM nomination - sorted!

Seems to be your w/end for firemen, Neil! Bravo - outstanding work - your dios always tell a complete story in one photo and that's a rare gift.

I love the last shot of the fireman booting the chair out of the way - how did you do it?

Great Work Neil, truly unsung heroes. I remember the days of that era and it still makes me sad to think of all the loss of life.

A fantastic diorama. It is so often the case that simple is effective and this dio is extremely effective. The craftsmanship involved is also outstanding. It really does succeed in capturing a sense of humanity. A nice, poignant tribute too. It is rare for a few images to say so much. Very well done !

Thanks chaps, the comments are very much appreciated.
David: the chair is pushed onto a little metal rod, which i pushed into the base,...it's so light, only a few mm of rod held it.

To the lads who asked about the helmets, they are the Wolseley helmets made by Tony Barton (sorry for butchering them Tony).....with some work done on them.

    Thanks again folks.

    Neil.

PS: Thanks AEB, i thought it was about time, the poor firemen got mention.

This is a topic I've never seen on this board, and you've managed to capture it very well! The chair-kicking picture is great!

Yes Chunky, The helmets are made from the wolseley helmets made by Tony Barton.
It's a great shame to butcher them, but they're the only thing out there to produce the old cork brigade helmet.
Add liner, and leather chin strap, and you have a pretty good representation.
