The end of an era . . . Playboy to cease nudity in March 2016

    See subject.

Playboy without nudity is like The Walking Dead without zombies.

Playboy is no longer relevant and have not been for so many years because they never embraced the digital/online age with the advent of the internet and basically free porn online.

They're a shadow of their former self from a cultural and social perspective from the 50s through the 90s.

Don't be surprised if their attempt to increase circulation ends up failing and they cease publication outright and/or sell out to another corporation and go back to basics, but I predict it's pretty much a death knell for them.

Let's be frank and honest. Many of us grew up viewing Playboy and other such fare as a rite of passage so to speak. Kind of sad in a way to see this happen.

Wow, this is a dumb idea. Of course the magazine itself has been pretty irrelevant over the last few years. They used to go after celebrities, and get them. I haven't seen too many for several years now. The layouts have gotten smaller and smaller. I grew up on this magazine, and when it came time to renew, just a couple months ago, I seriously considered not doing it, and I've had a subscription since my dad's 2nd wife got me my first subscription for my 15th birthday. (My dad had every issue since they first started publication.) I guess once this subscription runs out, I'm done. I don't mind a little mystery, but that's what SI and Maxim are for.

I heard this on the news this morning and was shocked. I can see why though. But Playboy without the nudity seems unnatural. Guess all things must come to an end.

There's no denying some very fine writers have published in Playboy, though. Among them are Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut, Norman Mailer, Ray Bradbury and Ian Fleming.

As I always say, "Everything changes, nothing stays the same," but the mere notion of Playboy without nude pictorials is unthinkable!

Inevitable. The print magazine world is dead, except for niches. These days nudity is just coordinated via your social media consultant so magazine publication is irrelevant.

The mag was not only a right of passage for many young men, it was also a surrogate (albeit perhaps imperfect) sex-ed medium. It also helped move a "stick up its collective six" America out of some of the darkness it dwelt in, post-WW2.

The appearance in Playboy of writers and other notables, was sometimes the first encounter readers had of them. I remember Playboy being described as perhaps more "naughty" than a destroyer of morality. Indeed, quite moral individuals could be found on the pages.

The era that Playboy succeeded in, and actually was a part of, is well past. For many reasons. How the new magazine will do, I won't venture to guess. I hope that they continue to offer viewpoints and literary works of the promise that they have traditionally. Also, that they provide a venue for fine cartoons like those in their heyday.

I wish them luck in their new enterprise.

I read yesterday that Playboy piloted the concept on their website and viewership quadrupled.

I have subscribed to Playboy Plus twice in the past. It seems now they have different tiers and membership levels on their website. The regular PB.com is like what's going to change and their PB Plus is still the way everybody knows Playboy. I haven't bought a magazine in ages.

Finally, they updated their subscription rate for their archive. I bought the two dvd rom box sets they released a couple of years ago on clearance at my local Barnes and Noble. The 50's and 60's. I really would've wanted the 70's one but they never did that one and the archive site used to be $300.

I don't think I'll miss Playboy. If I had to read an American magazine of this nature, I'd go for Cheri or Hustler.

As one who was exposed to Playboy at an early age I'll just say "Good riddance to bad rubbish".

exactly, those have hot sex scenes where as pb was just art! but even then just google for porn, that is the most economical way these days. or even better yet have sex with a real woman. maybe even your own wife, if you can find one.

Just saw the November Playboy at a barbershop. Good to know that it is business as usual if only for a few more months.

Hence that's why I wrote "Good to know that it is business as usual if only for a few more months."

I see some disagreement on this issue. Sure, the first naked woman I saw was in a Playboy. Yes I've used them for the obvious, but I also have used them to study anatomy and draw the women in them. I am an artist and do not always have access to nude models. Other magazines like Cheri and Hustler are great for what they're great for, more graphic than Playboy, but I do not necessarily want to draw that. I will miss their spreads as they were done in good taste and helped me improve my drawing skills.

Playboy got crushed by Maxim on one saide and Hustler on the other (along with High Society, Penthouse, Club, Club International, Oui, Cheri, Barely Legal, Penthouse Letters, Gent, Chic, Razzle, Score, and Juggs).

I don't think competitors had much of an effect. The print magazine industry is dying as subscription numbers are way down which translates into way less ad dollars, and the ad industry has been shifting away from print as it is. The industry was slow to transition to digital, and is still struggling with ways to monetize as you can't convert print subscribers to digital very easily. If anything the onslaught of celebrities self promoting themselves through social media with the sort of content they use to sell to tabloid/print magazines has hurt them more than competitors.
