The Greek forces at Thermopylae by most accounts numbered in the thousands, but the Persian forces in the hundreds of thousands. Contingents from the various city states accompanied the 300-strong Spartan force under Leonidas. They invested the pass at Thermopylae, a natural choke-point, and rebuffed several Persian attacks, with heavy losses for the Persians.
When betrayed by a local who led a Persian force to a goat path which bypassed their position, Leonidas realized their position was untenable.

He released the majority of the force, save for his Spartans, about 400 Thebans bound to the Spartans, and a force of perhaps 700 Thespians, who chose to stay. Thus it was a force of lifelong professionals alongside citizen-soldiers. These men died where they stood.

The sacrifice became a rallying point for the Greeks, and left the Persians and their king stunned by their losses as well as the ferocity of the Greek infantry.

If only the Spartans had upgraded to the Mark IV Mijolner armour.
    A major tactical error.

So these guys just acted like soldiers? No wonder they lost.

Actually, I know who the Thespians were. Just couldn't resist.
