Welcome to Kalleefornia, Nomad!
The top shop in the vicinity of the City of Angels would have to be EchoBase. Not a huge emporium, but, damn, what a selection and an outstanding couple of guys that work there, Tung and Nan:

A truly great hobby shop with a reasonable assortment of sixth scale and a hellacious book selection is Brookhurst Hobby, down behind the Orange Curtain:

Good luck and spend lots of money... our state needs all the taxes it can get!
EBT is great to see, but remember that during show days, the store will most likly be closed - best to call ahead.
There's also Pegasus Hobbies off I-10 near the fairplex:

Not a lot of 1/6th, but there are some good finds from time to time. Lot's of models and also a good RC section.
