    You can use floral tape.

I've used masking tape and painted it green, the paint tended to flake off though. I've also painted bandage tape but it doesn't like to stay stuck.

    Athletic tape is good.

I used the floral tape on my "poor mans" Breacher, on both the bolt cutters and sledge, gave it a good wrap and painted it OD, acrylic OD that is. Hasn't flaked a bit and the tape hasn't seemed to loosen any.

I've used masking tape in the past with the same probs Micar777 mentioned above.

I use athletic tape painted with acrylic paint. Works and looks great.

Darth your using my idea. the acrylic paint on the athletic tape binds it all togather.

also try to paint a 2nd coat of semi gloss over the paint to give it that real feel

Yeah, Im in the Army. I have lots of the "100 mph tape" as we call it. You can usually find it at an Army Surplus store. If not, Ranger Joes or US Cav has it.

Like 54Cuda2 says - floral tape works nicely; also since it was meant to stay sticky when moist, it absorbs paint without losing adhesion. Nice feature when you've got it "just the way" you wanted it. Paint keeps it from falling apart.
