I'm putting this here because I normally use this technique on gun barrels. I happen to be working on a helmet so that's the pictures you're getting.

Paint the object flat black:
Take some graphite I just bought a stick, I've used #2 pencils for years), scrape the edge with an exacto so you get a pile of graphite powder:
Dip your finger in the powder and rub it over the object.
Spray with flat clearcoat.

Just rubb it all over, the graphite will highlite the raised or smooth areas, leaving creavasice dark.
