I've seen so many cool figs on bases recently. For a nam base , I needed a little bigger than normal area for vegetation...... I found this dome base at
www.hobbylobby.com for 5 bucks. It's already finished so I didn't have to worry about warping:

It measures 8" in diameter.
Next I hot glued some floral Dry Foam to the base:

Next....mixing the ground work.I use 1 ice cream scooper of celluclay, 1 TABLESPOON of Elmer's glue, 1 TEASPOON of iron oxide colored acrylic paint(from Michael's) and a TABLESPOON of water . Use this for as many times as to get the amount needed. It was 8 for mine:

Mixing the recipe:

Applying:

adding some foliage:

I then used a teaspoon to spread some red crushed volcanic rock over the entire base. I got most of my plants at saveoncrafts.com . I also got a few nice plants at Michael's.

The nail was for figure placement:

Cool looking base and neat tutorial; heh it must have been some length to gather all of the bits for this project, but the tall sand coloured grass popping out here and there compliment the nice variety of plants and base very well.
Guess we better chalk your's up to that list of cool dio bases as well ;)

Super tutorial Butch. I like to see how people are doing the things they dio, instead of just presenting a picture of the finished project.
Thanks!

That base rocks! What a cool selection of vegetation. The base will surely excellently frame any figure you choose to put with it. I hope you don't have little bits of that green floral foam everywhere:) I always seem to spread crumbs of that stuff all over the joint whenever I try and use it.

Thanks for sharing.

I'll have to give this a try as well. Thanks for the nice tutorial.
Any ideas for a beach landing dio? I am thinking in the lines of WWII Pacific Marines storming the beach.

Sawgunner - I am currently in design phase for a Nam diorama, gonna be similar scale to the modern Rangers one I did - but would love to know where you got the foliage from? Can't seem to source it, although probably missing the wood for the trees (no pun intended)

Except for the tall grass, all the foliage comes from pulling apart silk/plastic plants I got at Michael's.
