"...We broke into a house to observe from the roof and provide covering fire for the Iraqis, then we went back down and all hell broke loose so we went storming back up. The enemy was using four vehicles, one for shooting and three VBIEDs -- vehicle-borne IEDs driven by Mooj wanting looking for their 72 virgins. The VBIEDs posed the greatest threat but our guys quickly dropped 40 millimeter propelled grenades on them.
A SEAL near me had an old M-79 grenade launcher that I think was phased out shortly after Vietnam in favor of the M-203, a tube slung below an M-16. I wondered why he'd chosen to carry it but quickly found out.
He fired it like it was just another appendage, taking out a VBIED with a single round. The SEALs fought like machines. T-1 Terminators have nothing on them. In fairly short order, all four vehicles were destroyed...."
They use M79's because an M203 will not fit right on an MK18 Mod 0 (basically an M4 with a 10.3-10.5" barrel). A rail mounted M203 can mount on the Mk18....but it will be REALLY front heavy, so none are used on the weapon. Thats why they lug around M79's, because no one can throw a grenade up to 300 meters.
a number of different places, I think supply captain had them, but I'd have to check, there's a couple of threads on lightfighter.com about getting different patches, and I think one of them was on this very patch
EOD and Coastal Warfare Sailors getting some range time..I'd love to have an M4 configured like that..seem to have the bi-pod foregrip too.
China Lake, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2006) - Sailors from Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron Five and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Group One shoot the M-16 at a target 25 yards away for a weapons qualification course during a joint task force exercise. In January, the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) combined EOD, Naval Coastal Warfare, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support functions and Seabees together under one command. NECC integrates all war-fighting requirements for expeditionary combat and combat support elements. This transformation allows for standardized training, manning, and equipping of Sailors who will participate in the global war on terrorism as part of the joint force. This looks like the one being used..I have a friend that's using this on his SAW in Afghanistan..I made a 1/6th version for a bash I am doing for him. http://www.grippod.com/
