    How Do They Do It??

Hello folks, newb here...Well I've been lurking awhile

I look at the paint jobs done by companies like Hot Toys on their 1/6th scale figure heads and I'm blown away by the sheer scale of artistry I see.

HOW DO THEY DO IT?? I can see spatter, translucency etc
I've looked online for anything resembling tutorials but come up empty... :

    Any help appreciated!

Trade secrets, HT for sure they will not share to anyone. They perhaps have the best equipment to use, state of the art ones that easily can not be found here.
There are members here who has done pretty descent HS repaints, some had exceeded expectations, it is just a matter of how you liked the results. I can say is that they did an awesome job with those repaints but still not as close to what HT does or not the same results like HT.
Every maker differs from the other maker, no matter how the other maker made theirs beautiful. HT seems to make theirs perfect and same tone across the board.
My take is that, car done from the factory is very much different from a repainted one by a shop. Oven baked painting is still different from paint applied to dry, though shops offer oven bake painting for cars still never comes close.

    Hey thanks for the replies!

It seems to me also that the resin used is translucent which helps to mimic the effect of true skin...

I'm not a painter but from what I know of plastic and painting, all of it is built in layers and NOT cast or molded like that, just like real skin.

Before it is painted, the skin is texture with small pores which will pickup layered non-perfect colors. But in real life, people with pores that large have skin problems. LOL....

You can see in Kojun's pictures, the heads are light pinkish to simulate how your flesh really looks under the skin - think of pork. Then you have a uniform skin color that is slightly translucent or paint in a super thin layer.

Then, you will notice he highlights all the raised areas with a second pigment.

The eyes are totally painted in layers (light pink or red around the eye sockets, then white on the eyeballs, then the color of the iris - blue, brown, black, hazel, etc..., then the pupil in black) with a clear coat.

Then you just paint the hair, teeth and etc... and touch up spots you want to highlight.

The best guy here is really Tony Barton. He takes a regular unpainted head and makes it look way better than many of HT's heads.

HT heads are nice, but many are just molded to skin color with very good printed or painted eyes and hair colors. There is not a lot of face texture unless it is a DX or RECENT movie master piece figure.

DID is still king of mass production head painting with HT coming in 2nd.

You also have to remember that those HT shots are all the prototype promo pieces which are hand-painted (or airbrushed) by the top HT painters to bring out the sculpt to its absolute best advantage. The actual production pieces are good, but they are not painted to the same quality as the prototype heads.

How do they do it? Years of practice and dedication. These are not novice painters, but people who make their living at it. That's like saying how does Michael Jordan fly or gymnasts flip through the air? Try painting heads everyday for 10 years and maybe you'll get the idea.

I am going to chime in here, after painting numerous heads and owning more HT and DID heads then i can count and studying them by stripping them of their paint work, I have learned that most of these companies use decals for the eyes and paint around them. This is how they achieve the realism. They also use paint not available to most of us which dries tough as nails.
