"Desperate Defense" Vietnam 1969 UPDATE!!

My contest entry for the Charlie In The Wire contest. I'll try to get some outdoor shots before the actual deadline, but I wanted to be sure I got some thing in at least.
The inspiration came from the name of the contest, the references are a mix of real life fire base photo's, the final battle in Platoon, and the final issue of "The Punisher: Born" comic series.
A sudden night assault on Fire base Kathleen caught its defenders off guard, many of the defenders barely made it to their positions before the wire was breached. Having just woken up the soldiers grabbed their rifles and gear with what ever ammunition was in it at the time. The northern perimeter of the base was hit the hardest and the fastest, and many of the defenders quickly ran out of ammo and had to resort to hand to hand combat.

Here are the figures used, and some close ups of the dio

WIP Shots

For the diorama I completely ripped off of SAWGUNNER's tutorial here, it worked out great!
Nam dio base

The sandbags are weathered black box and soldier story. They where put into a Tupperware container with a mix of real (baseball field) dirt, brown acrylic paint and water. It was sloshed about for about thirty seconds then left to dry.

Very cool. THe only suggestion i would make would be some additional weathing on the figures gear and uniforms, and some sweatstains on the shirts =)

Very nice diorama on the spirit of the contest...only suggestion try to remove some stick granades from those vcs...I guess after passing thru the wire and get this close of the sand bags ...they would strike a few agaist the marines... on the contest. Cheers

Re: "Desperate Defense" Vietnam 1969

That's fantastic! As soon as I saw it, I thought of Platoon.
The use of the Screaming German head is perfect.

Roll those guys in the mud a bit, and they'll fit right in with the rest of the scene even better. Would give a real desperate, dirty feel, I think.

Re: "Desperate Defense" Vietnam 1969

Thanks for the comments so far guys, its greatly appreciated.
If I get some time to weather them up before the contest is over I'll try to do it for that, but as of right now I might not even have time to get outdoor pictures till Sunday :/
either way I'll weather them up some more and get the outdoor shots and then update this post when ever I get the time though.

I do have plans to continue the diorama, maybe including my original plan of the .50 cal bunker and another section of trench. I'm in the process of finding things to make it more "lived in" and hunting down more sandbags right now

Re: "Desperate Defense" Vietnam 1969 UPDATE!!

I added another trench section Friday night/Saturday morning, I just need to figure out how to add in the bunker, and what materials to use for the bunker.

This made think of the last battle in Platoon. Awesome, awesome work! That extra length really adds depth to it.
