Amazing photos!!!! Amazing figure! Can't wait to get my mitts on it!

For the life of me, after all those Heath Ledger Joker incarnations HT released, none of them has him SMILING or LAUGHING (like this), as the Joker should!

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

Hmm,

Sorry to be the party pooper, but, there's something off on the sculpt and I just can't put my finger on what it is. The skin texture looks overscale somehow. I'm just not one of those people who can automatically go nuts over everything HT do. For the DX money you expect brilliance, and it just isn't there for me.

I'm old enough to remember the Billiken kit when that came out, it still haunts me when I think I could have bought it MIB, not recast, for 40!! It even had an extra HS. A feature that this really should have. The missing HS is the one in the beret with the make-up running. I saw paint-ups of the Billiken kit that blew this into the weeds.

CHEERS!

This looks pretty darn good to me. Billiken kit did have great hs. 2nd head as DX would've been super!

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

I think it looks pretty amazing.

Let's be realistic though--it's 2012 and prices are not the same as they were 20+ years ago, DX or not. Also, you're not getting the same paint app on a Billiken that you're getting on a Hot Toys unless you're an ace painter willing to take time to re-do it.

At 1/6 or thereabouts you're always going to have someone, somewhere unhappy with the likeness.

Wow. Amazing. Can't wait to get.

As for looking "off", let's not forget these figures aren't mean to be observed at 2 to 4 times magnification - where certain features that look good at 1x may seem distorted and off.

It's been said to death, but it really does look different "in-hand" versus in photos--even really awesome photos like Luka's. ^_^

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

I hear what you're saying, but, compare what you got with the DX-01 with what you get here. It's only the PERS and a few extra hands that lift this above an MMS.

Sometimes superb quality photos make a figure and sometimes they don't. They show up flaws and this has them. There are DX's that really deliver, Jack Sparrow and the DK Joker, even MJ, and then there are those that fall short like Indy, and sadly, this. You have to be blown away enough by what you see in photos to want it 'in hand'.

The thing I like about OSW is that we're all into different things and have collections covering a wide range of genres. On SSF there seem to be folk obsessed with just the one line and you get practically burnt at the stake for daring to differ from their opinions.

Had I the money and I wanted a DX Joker it wouldn't be this

CHEERS!

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

Yeah, if you don't like, you won't buy. Perfectly reasonable to me. I don't judge, I just counterpoint. ^_^

I do think this one has a fair amount of accessories, considering the license and the actors involved. Looking at the 89 Batman, he doesn't have a whole lot beyond the extra mouths and and hands. To be fair, I really think Nicholson's people wanted a substantial fee for his likeness and that contributed a lot to the cost of this particular set.

Yeah I thought it was coming with an alternate head also. One thing that stands out to me is that the teeth look a little too small.

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

What is ironic to me is that I seem to have had a down on high end figures and just this week purchased one (Subway 24 Bauer) that DX fans would probably recoil in horror at.

I was so surprised that nobody said "How come you're buying this and then criticise DX figures!?"

I bought the figure because I liked the overall look of it and it took just a half step enough into generic for it to be just a cool looking guy with a gun.

The thing with DX figures is that the good ones set the bar really high and our expectations are then high. When those expectations aren't met and the anticipation is high it brings you down a bit. The way HT go on, every DX should absolutely be that character miniaturised.

I almost laugh when the fanboys come out with "Have you actually got this figure!?"

If I don't like it then of course I bloody won't have it. Sometimes, particularly on SSF, I do get the feeling that, even if people do have the figure and they don't like it, they won't say so because they think their 'mates' on the thread that think anything by HT is "AWESOME!!!!" will jump on them.

CHEERS!

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

Sharp looking figure, but aside from moving eyes, I'm not seeing how this should be a DX figure. Seems to be a little light on accessories for being a $250 figure... He has an extra coat. the upcoming DX Luke Skywalker has an extra head, extra body, and a complete extra outift as well as a diorama for less than $20 more.

I'm not a HT hater - It's their stuff I typically buy these days. I'm just underwhelmed by this guy at this price point. Had he been in the $175 ballpark, I'd have nothing but great things to say about him. At $250... meh

Yeah, you see, we diversify. We are into 1/6 in general and can appreciate a broad range of figures from different manufacturers.

When HT are good, boy are they. There's no denying they do have an impressive body of work. When they're less impressive and a big fuss is made, ie Indy and Alice, it makes you look for things that otherwise you may have been more forgiving about.

If this figure had been DX-01 and had come out when it did we would doubtless have placed it on an altar.

CHEERS!

PS (Your Jack is still on PO!? Mine is in the post.)

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

As I mentioned, let's not forget that these 1/6 figures are sculpted and painted to look good in-hand, and not when magnified. Many of these details are somewhat exaggerated at 1/6 scale to better reproduce the look in 1/1. The way light falls on an object and the way shadows work changes as you go smaller in scale - shadows and shading don't come naturally at smaller scales. That's why when you paint 1/35 (54mm) figures, you have to really go even more extreme in terms of shading and highlighting - less so at 1/6, and at 1/1, the sculpt will interact with light and do its own thing without artificial highlighting or shading. Ever look at a magnified photo of a smaller scale figure?

I wouldn't call these "imperfections" that are being highlighted, but rather sculpting appropriate for the given scale.

Re: Hot Toys DX08 The Joker (photo review)

I think it translated really well from prototype to production, with minimal loss in fidelity. However, I made a decision to cancel my PO in January, and even seeing the on-hand pics now doesn't quite ignite the enthusiasm I had when it was first announced. This probably has more to do with me cooling off towards Hot Toys though, and they better release some news on both Catwomen before I start to ignore them all together.
