SS Tarawa - "The Pacific" Robert Leckie
I enjoyed the HBO series "The Pacific", and was amazed at the conditions these brave soldiers had to go through in the pacific theater. Anyway, tried to bash a screen-accurate Robert Leckie. Here you go. Any suggestions on ways to improve on this figure are welcomed!

Re: SS Tarawa - "The Pacific" Robert Leckie
One thing - I thought the Marines in WWII used a more circle shaped dog tag with a cotton or leather cord, and not the more traditional oval-rectangle shape used by the Army? I recently did a WWII Marine flamethrower (using mainly the SS Iwo Jima figure) but haven't gotten around to making some tags.
Otherwise, it looks good. He needs some sweat stains though.

thanks for the tips guys. Seems like everyone wants to see him get dirty. What's the best way to do that? lol, never weathered anything before (a bit scared to mess up such a nice figure!)

If you don't want to get him dirty you can just get his clothing wet redress him and as it dries it will give his clothing a more realistic drape and get rid of the fresh from the box look.
I understand your reluctance to mess up a fig you paid nearly a hundred bucks fore.

Remember that he was not always all dirty and filthy.
When he first outfitted, he had all new and clean equipment and fatigues, like we all had ,till too much time in the bush.

Re: SS Tarawa - "The Pacific" Robert Leckie
Ok I have a question for the more experienced "weathermen" out there ;P.
If I were to dunk the entire figure into a bucket of water, and then just let the water dry out, would that make the clothes a bit more authentic looking?

The target area is rather small.. I hope I have good accuracy!

Re: SS Tarawa - "The Pacific" Robert Leckie
no ive tried that man, it doesnt do anything, using a little liquitex acrylic in water and soaking it works wonders for me tho-- changes the texture and to me looks more 1:1, consider wat color is best for the uniform ur customizing, and underdoing it isnt a problem but overdoing it can be. keep in mind that a us marines uniform would be soaked with sweat, dirt and smoke, plus getting ragged around the edges. i dont think leckie pissed himself while in battle but i cant be sure

if your that worried, just use chalk of some kind. It washes right out with bit of soap and water so no worries about making it permanent.

Chalk based pastels and water colour can work very well for weathering and dirtying up a figure. If you make a mistake, it rubs or washes right off.
This guy is looking pretty great though.
You may want to go for a wet/sweaty effect, as well. It got pretty warm in the Pacific
