For some, the answer is in your question: figure stand.
Sometimes sticky tac works well enough.

Re: how to stand figures up the good way?
I have used rare earth magnets. A pair in the boots and a pair in the dio would work. Others have used pins. Drill a small hole in a foot and the same sized hole in the dio then a small pin from the foot into the dio and you shouldn't have any trouble. As long as whatever you use for a pin is tight in both holes you should be fine.

The drill option has always seemed the easiest to me, though magnets would present a much better appearance. I usually manage to get most of my figures to stand fairly stable, but the few I can't I usually just use a cut clothes hanger that runs from the base into the paint leg. I've also drilled a hole through the bottom of the boot and run the wire through there to hide it.

depends on the type of body used I suppose. I use a lot of s2 bodies and they balance great with very realistic dynamic poses........no need for stands. stands kind of detract from the figure for me.
