Exclamation Frazetta,BlazingCombat,FrenchIndochina,Mat49's

Yes, they are all connected, can you believe it!?!

EDITED 3/7/04:
And here is my homage to it, in spirit, if not in accuracy

end of edit: more towards bottom of thread

I remember seeing these as Warren reprints in comix bookstores when I was in college but never bought em which I deeply regret, dangit!!!
Does anyone have 'em and do the issues have tales about French Indochina?? I'm curious as to the uniform/equipment depicted in the art as reference for 1:6 figure kitbashing.

Check out the great Frank Frazetta's art for the covers. I never noticed them Mat.49 SMG's before!

Issue#1 on the left, #3 on the right.

Incredible closeup of cover#1.

Lookit that, the copyright is dated 1965!

Interesting looking comic books.

It's a title I'm not familiar with. I'm guessing it wasn't released in the USA?

Long, Long, long ago, Wayne. Availability had a lot to do with where you lived. Those comics are 35 cents, although when I used to scrounge pop bottles to buy comics, as a kid, we bitched when the price went up from 10 cents to 12 cents.

Of course, they also were printed on papyrus, rather than etched in stone tablets.

I guess where you lived had a lot to do with availability. I lived in deepest, darkest Montana, and was 13 in 1965.

My comic book collection consisted of Nick Fury and His Howling Commandos, Combat!, Enemy Ace, Haunted Tank, Sgt Rock and Easy Company, and many other titles...but not the above.

It looks a bit too classy for the people I hung around with.

I've read interviews from the publisher and some creators that Blazing Combat had distribution problems because it was considered a anti-war magazine. All the magazines from Warren publishing featured a who's who of comic book artists including Al Williamson, Wallace Wood, Alex Toth, the last comic book art from Frazetta among other greats. They were shooting for the being the second coming of EC Comics, featuring many of the same creators.

Here's a tip for people interested that should save you money some were reprinted in 1993/94 by Apple Comics.

All that and I didn't answer the question.

My gawrsh, McGee (and welcome to the OSW!), I couldn't find an index of story summaries but getting the titles of 'em sure does make my mouth water. Sigh...stupendous first step, though. I luvved comics when I was a kid but really got into the underground/mature stuff (e.g. independants, Metal Hurlant artists like Corben, as well as finding the reprints of EC & Warren comics) when I was in colleg, my early working single years, and the Lonesome Rome years in Colorado. Great help, McGeethose were fun days you made me remember!

Man, what great stories those were! I had issue #2, but gave it away to a friend long ago. Now I gotta find the reprints!

Thoes would be great references for 1/6 Dio's. Frazetta is one of my fav's. Lots of drama and bold color. Didin't even know he did Combat pics. So did he just do the covers or did he illustrate the inside too?

I'm guessing he just did the covers but what McGee posted says he did a 1 pager inside one of the issues with something titled "Easy to Tuff a Surfboard"...

I remember that Frazetta cover in an ad when I was a kid leaving through the pages of Monsters fanzine, sadly never saw the real thing. When I subsequently learnt more about Frazetta, I was amazed that he was responsible for that mighty piece of art... thought all he did were curvacious sultry babes and Conan-like warriors.

I recall another cover of that time, this of a GI bayonetting a German soldier, it was really "in-your-face" art at that time. I wonder when Frank did that?

Thumbs up Blazing Combat-

You know, when you brough this Comics back in to my mine it bough back the good days.
I had all 4 of the issue, and still have them.
Blazing Combat was one of the best that they put out.
I also had G.I.Combat (Haunted Tank), Enemy Ace,Sgt. Rock and
Nick Fury and all the rest. Still have most of them.
But I think Blazing Combat was more of a magazine Comic.
I guess I need to get them back out.

Not sure why that Frazetta one pager is listed. I'm pretty sure from the title its his anti-smoking strip he did. It featured a few young surfers included a shapley one in a bikini (big surprise) It ran in the different Warren mags.

Lightbulb Here's the rest of my 1/6 homage:

I had to throw in the hot babe because that is a trademark of Frazetta's fantasy art.

I know, I know, my artistic license should be revoked but I couldn't help it...

Ah, fun.

Question Fantasy?

The voices inside my head ask:
"Fantasy...What fantasy?"

Well, I always did think of myself as the Filipino version of John Carter, Warlord of Mars...errr...Barsoom.
