Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Hi Folks, I am wondering if we have any electronic, mini circuit board, radio control, LED experts who could help me with a few problems?

I want to know if there are any small-ish rotating disc like parts, which could be used for a blue rotating beacon?
I have found a site in Denmark who deals in 1/18th rotating beacons, but to be honest, i would have to sell the vehicle i am building, to be able to pay him!!

Here is some of his stuff, it's fantastic, but slightly too dear for me.

Does anyone have the "know how" to put this kinda stuff together?...or what it would take?

I have also been searching for sirens, but the only sirens i can find, are the US type, wail/yelp etc.
Is there a way to produce the siren sound i need? (the old British two tone horn siren)

Any help is appreciated, as i know zilch about this gear.
I did put lights on my Landrover, but they were twin pulse strobe lights, which were effective, but not correct.
The kit cost about a fiver, and i only had to attatch the 9 volt battery.

Thanks in advance,
Neil.

PS: Here is a siren i found on YT,.....have a listen to this, it has got to be a real recording of a siren....it's brilliant!!

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Heya, Ulsterman!

Like you, I am "electronically challenged", but have often thought of trying to incorporate lights and sounds into minatures. One suggestion I have for ready-made stuff is model railroading. I've seen a large variety of flashing, strobing, blinking lighting effects, and small sound chip set ups for audio effects.

Here's one model train supplier I know of: http://www.walthers.com/

Another suggestion would be to prowl some of the model train sites, I imagine they might have "how-to" articles.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help....

I agree on checking out the model railroad sources. Flashers and strobes can be found in the Walters catalog. It's been years since I was into Model Railroading but they have some great sound and light systems. It's just a matter of finding exactly what you want. Battery and direct electric sources can be used. A mars light sounds like what you need. It gives the effect of movement by high and low intensity of the bulb. Just put a covered dome on it and you should be good to go. They may have more advanced strobes and flashers now but you would need to get with someone thats into present day model railroading scene to find as to what's fully available now.

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Don't have any expertise, but I have researching LEDs and circuits and here's what I found so far:

http://www.imaginarycolours.com/Merc...ry_Code=BattOp

http://www.cowlacious.com/LightProd.htm

http://www.discovercircuits.com/L/lite-flash.htm

http://www.ehow.com/how_2246669_make-flashing-led.html

http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_3/chpt_3/12.html

http://www.bowdenshobbycircuits.info...htm#4017-2.gif

Don't know if any of those will offer any insights, but they may. Let us know if you find anything.

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Theres some nice LED's out there that don't require any additional resisters to limit the current, they literally can be attached to the battery out of the box!

They can also come in loads of forms like blinking ones and strobes so my advice would be search on ebay for the more common ones.

Building circuits can be a right pain mind, I was in the process of making a fader circuit for a prop where the light slowly comes on from dull to bright and vice versa and I had to order loads of bits as you have to buy them in bulk from a wholesaler. Ebay may be your best bet.

Have you thought about using a cheap MP3 player for the siren?

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Hi fellas, Thanks russcal, H34crewchief, J3D1 for all your help.
..and thanks prvtnoclass for all those links!!
I had a look through some and were quite helpful,...but i have been trawling through you tube again today, (all bloody day!) and came across this site.
http://www.laureanno.com/shop/produc...roducts_id=116

This little beacon effect looks quite good, and, as they say, it can hold an 8mm LED.
I would say this is as close as i'm going to get.
Their prices don't seem too bad at all,.....but i am not sure if they still have these gadgets for sale, i will have to ask.
They are in Rhode Island.
I don't know if this effect will work off 9v, as i would like it to.
I must try them though.

Thanks again fellas, i really appreciate the input.
If anyone else has any expert advice, please feel free.
Neil.

Thanks Justin, But they seem to only deal in fiber optics, i'm not sure that's what i'm after,...bet, i'm really not sure.
thanks for the link anyway mate.

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Those look good. I've used both 9 volt battery and units wired in series with an electrical motor. I've used them with regular mini blubs and LEDs when they first appeared on the scene. Neil I think you're in the ballpark and just need to find one in a suitable price range that fits your needs.

While they state the top of their home page they say the specialize in fiber optics, many of their kits use LEDs including a beacon, lighthouse and fire effect kits.

It seems you found what you want, but it may not hurt to give that other link a more thorough once over just to make sure or for future reference.

Thanks for posting the link of what you found - added to my research.

Yes, I am considering their LED SW droid kits. I wanted to know if anyone on this forum has tried them.

Thanks Gary, have sent an email, and i await their reply, the thing that worries me is, that their site hasn't been updated in a while.

Can you tell me where the beacon is on their site, i have been all through it (i think) and can't find it.
The sound effects open all kinds of possibilities!!!...(i wish i was "with it" and all that, because i'm way behind the times when it comes to MP3 players and stuff, i'll have to get myself out of the dark ages!!

I'm so square.

An I Pod Shuffle might be the sound unit you could use. It's about the size of a match book. Small speakers from the model Railroad scene could help. They have sound units for N scale so the speakers aren't very large.

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

I used to be into electronics... the circuit you want for the British Eee-- Ahh sound uses two 555 or one 556 timer IC. The circuit can be built on a piece of circuit board or bread board... as a ham (a radio enthusiast) and he can tell you what these mean. Anyway, here's a link:

http://home.maine.rr.com/randylinscott/feb21.htm

or

http://www.elecfree.com/circuit/digi...ren-by-ic-555/

I put these together out of a design from Radio Electronics a long time ago... If you can get access to model railroading--- it used to be a big hobby in the UK--- you can get a lot of circuitry and uses out of that chip.

For simple flashing LEDs,

http://wild-bohemian.com/electronics/flasher.html

For those who remember the old Knight Rider show, you can build LED chasers which looks like the lights in the YouTube Vids by using four or 5 miniature LEDs in a circular container. The basic circuitry :

Re: Do we have any L.E.D, circuit board, eletronics experts?

Hi Mike, Thank you so much for taking the time to post the links.
I'll see what i can figure out from all that wonderful info, and try and come to a decission as to which way i will go, however, it's very much appreciated mate, thank you.
...although the MP3 idea is churning in my head.
I saw MP3 players on Ebay for about 10, and they had a built in speaker.
Do MP3 players simply record sound etc from your PC, and then play them back?
I wasn't joking when i said i was electronically challenged...

The problem with that would be, i would want the MP3 hidden from view (Engine compartment, or under vehicle)

Lots to think about here.

Thanks, Neil.
