3 new sculpts (test castings): human, cone-head and Chimera

Edit: painted (mostly) IMG_2256 by kraggy2011, on Flickr

After many setbacks and delays, I have at last made the first test castings of my 3 newest skull sculpts.

These are raw castings fresh out of the mould. A few small imperfections but overall they came out nice! Once painted they will look far better of course

Looking good, their living counterparts can be found in any local pub on a Friday night, particularly tonight!

    Beautiful props!

How many castings did the mold of those skull walls produce & is it still in good shape?

I made 2 so far, I am making them bit by bit (every time I accidentally mix too much plastic I pour the excess in to the mould. over time I get a usable skull wall instead of wasted plastic mould hasn't seen much use yet since it is slow to cast one

Very nice! I don't know why, but skulls and skeletons have always fascinated me and you got both quality and quantity going for your collection.

Thanks! I do love skulls also, hence why I started teaching myself to sculpt. I have sculpted many many skulls over the past few years (aliens, monsters mostly) but I am still not at the level I want to be so I am continuing to practice.

I am already trying a 5th attempt at human skull in 1:6 and already I think it is looking better than the last even though only half done. Also making a demon skull that is mostly done.

I was digging out some older skulls to mould and sell but decided not to as they are really crappy now in comparison to my current level. I may still mould them for preservation then modify them to bring up to at least a usable level of detail then sell copies of the upgraded versions or just start from fresh on each one (as I did for the resistance Chimera. I decided it would be easier to sculpt a new one than to mod the old one).

I will have to take a pic of the entire range at some point.

Good looking work, those would compliment many projects. Are you tempted to make or modify entire skeletons, for the more extreme types?

I have thought about it, but decided not to as there are plenty available already that look good (Coo model, bones book and skeleton, fattel etc) whereas human skulls that are available are often inaccurate in shape/proportions or very low detail (especially the undersides) so I chose to focus on trying to get good at skulls only and am slowly getting there. Skulls have more uses than full skeletons too so better to focus on them for now.

Spines however is a different story. I intend to make spines for the skulls sometime.

Yours are definitely much better than THESE, yet they are being sold on eBay.

Those ones on ebay are recasts of the Teppachi helmet collection skulls. They are too narrow/long and the undersides have zero detailing, just a large hole. They are ok for background skulls. I got loads in Japan when I bought one or two sets of the helmets and like them for what they are

You are obviously well-read and well-experienced in this area. The only skulls I've got are the ones that came with the second COO skeleton and with the bone book one.

    I did some research haha

IIRC, from what I saw the 2nd COO skeleton had a very good skull (the first one had a silly ape-like skull). The bones book and skeleton skull though is pretty rubbish imo. Still love the skeleton though.
