Qmx Star Trek Original Series Dr. McCoy review

There are certain reviews I look forward to, and tonight's is one of those. I'm loving the Qmx Star Trek series, and their latest release - Dr. McCoy - has just hit my doorstep. This is a slightly early review, but these should be shipping very soon. I'm check out the exclusive version, and if you like the Kirk and Spock, you won't be disappointed. My review is here:

or you can find it with the rest of the reviews at the usual:

    Thanks for reading!

Re: Qmx Star Trek Original Series Dr. McCoy review

Excellent review for what looks like an excellent figure. Bonus kudos to Qmx for getting on top of some Kirk and Spock issues and improving those -- that's not something we can necessarily take for granted. Super bonus points to them for keeping the price where it is. As the line continues we know we are basically re-buying the same figure/outfit just with a different headsculpt and slight variation of accessories, but Qmx may be flowing some re-use savings down to the consumer, which takes the sting out of it.

Nanjin is totally "the man." This isn't just making "one more great ST-TOS figure" but so specifically character McCoy, in the details, the ring, the kit. I really hope at some point the license permits them to release Uniform Kits for crew Army Builder purposes.

He does look rather good. In other pics, I was concerned that his head was too small, but that doesn't seem to be the case in your pics. Regarding the dark skin tone, I do sometimes think that this is done so they photograph well. Paler skin would look too pale and washed out in pics and a darker tone can look more natural when photographed. I had a lot of trouble getting decent pics of my Figuarts Harley Quinn for precisely that reason, and I suspect you might notice it should you review the HT one.

Based on the other two and now Bones, I think it's safe to say that he won't be giving his classic assessment of this line for a time to come...

No doubt they should complete the basic TOS crew before they do anything else, but I'm really looking forward to what they do after that, particularly a TOS KLingon, and probably Khan, etc. Hopefully after the crew of 6, QMX will go deeper into the TOS world, and not just switch over to Movie Kirk Spock etc (which they've prototyped). Though I suspect the price may rise a bit after the first 6 crew, since there won't be as much re-use.

Didn't they post a Khan teaser some time ago on their FB page??
    Edit: found it

My wishlist for this series however is:
    - Scotty (confirmed) (exclusive: most probably a Tribble)
    - Uhura (exclusive proposal: Mirror Outfit
    - Chekov (exclusive proposal: Billy Claiborne's gun belt)
    - Sulu (confirmed) (exlusive proposal: the Unicorn Dog or his fence or his flower pet)
    - Khan (teased) (exclusive proposal: Dress suit)
    - Captain Kang (exclusive proposal: 2 swords)
    - Gorn (exclusive proposal: big rock)
    - the unnamed female Romulan Commander (exclusive item proposal: evening Dress)
    and perhaps Ambassador Sarek

I don't see Chapel and/or Rand being covered although fem crew would be very nice, but the question is: is there a market for these figs?

    Extras I'm hoping for are:
    - Captain's Chair (confirmed)
    - Con Station for Sulu and Chekov
    - Spock's Station
    - Uhura's Station
    for a partial Bridge Diorama
    - a Transporter Room Diorama
    - and some extra uniform parts would be nice to bash crew members

Great review! Thank you so much! LOL! This ain't no Mego! I think the McCoy head sculpt is the best of the three shown in your review. I love the original series so much and never get sick of seeing the different figures of these characters!

Re: Qmx Star Trek Original Series Dr. McCoy review

Thanks for the great review Mr. Crawford!

I just ordered this from QMX. The extra uniform shirt (AND getting it without paying an extra $20 like we had to do for the Vulcan lyre and Kirk's phaser rifle) was the extra nudge I needed.

I might get Scotty, but I'll probably stop there with TOS. I don't think the Sulu figure's likeness is strong enough for me to justify spending the money... and if I skip Sulu, I'd likely skip Chekov and Uhura.

Though I have to admit, I love humpel's suggestions for the exclusive! Flower Pet and Unicorn Dog all the way!

Now... if we get around to the other generations, I'm looking forward to Picard, Worf, and Data (all shown at toy shows) and Seven-of-Nine (showing frequently in my dreams!). Captain Sisko would be cool too!

I propose Picard's QMX exclusive be his 'casual duty' jacket and shirt. Data's exclusive could maybe be Spot. I assume Worf's exclusive would be his Bat'Leth but I'd hate for that to be one retailer's 'exclusive'. Maybe alternate 'short hair' and 'ponytail' head sculpts?

Didn't the DML Worf and Data come with Bat'Leth and Spot respectively?

I would absolutely love carded uniforms... all three TOS colours with varying ranks... I need red-shirts god dammit!!!

Also, does the Kirk come with his green casual shirt?

I think they could make a mint with a shirt (all three colours, varying ranks), trousers, phaser and tricorder on a card, maybe even other starship or starbase badges. Redshirts would sell like hotcakes I'm sure.

It'll never happen, but oldstyle Action Man/G.I. Joe carded uniform sets would be amazing - and I agree would sell very, very well!
Gold, Blue and Red shirts with varying rank insignia, also Captain's casual shirt and gold, blue and red overalls too... I'd get them all

Sadly no, he did not come with an alternate shirt. The only special extra Kirk had was the phaser rifle (available by ordering directly from QMX's website) and it added about $20 to the price of the figure.

    Received Bones today.
Found it curious. He is thin in the upper part of his body but wide at hips. Was this D Kelly's actual physical shape ? I hadn't noticed before, but will try to check out Internet pics and videos.

Mine came last week but I could only get it today. I think it's a fantastic figure, as for the body, it's the standard Coo body they have been using.
I bought mine from QMX with the 2nd shirt as well....overall A+.
I will be getting the whole lineup

If you were to switch the shirt, how would you go about it ?
    Hairdryer head removal ?
Or just lift the shirts over the head ?

There's a few images floating around from the New York Toyfair showing Scotty and Sulu – both look superb.
Also Kirk and Spock from Wrath of Khan, Data and Picard and also a Kirk (Chris Pine) from Star Trek Beyond.

    .
Good news for Canadians (and we deserve it, Shatner is one of us) is that this Exclusive seems to be available to some Canadian retailers -- see Toy Square Toy Square :: 12" Action Figure :: Other Figure :: QMX - Star Trek: TOS McCoy 1/6 Scale Articulated Figure (Exclusive Version). This is a welcome change from the normal situation with Sideshow etc where we can buy the Regular locally or choose to get whammied by extra Shipping and Customs chasing the Exclusives.

In theory I suppose McCoy should be dialed down excitement, since apart from the sculpt there's so much duplication from having Kirk and Spock -- but in practice, I'm totally thrilled he's on his way.
