New Vietnam Contest - Free MIB Figures and Gear Sets

Merry Christmas, everyone! Guarnere and I, with the cooperation of BlackOpsToys, have decided to put together a little Christmas gift for the community.
We’re proud to announce a new Vietnam War contest running from December 26, 2016 until April 30, 2017.
We’re looking for historically accurate kitbashes for the Vietnam War (1955-1975). What does that mean? Let’s use Red Dragon’s recent KOTM, “Hunter-Killer” as an example.

    Red Dragon’s “Hunter Killer”.

Echo Company Recon Platoon, 3-7th Infantry, early 1970.

SGT Ralph "Butch" Sparks, Echo Recon 3-7, 1969 - 1970.

Red Dragon’s “Hunter Killer”. Note the subdued 199th Infantry Brigade patch on the left shoulder.

SGT Ralph "Butch" Sparks getting ready to go out from FSB Mace, 1970.

As you can see from the photos, Red Dragon used a historical U.S. Army unit as the basis for his figures. He kitbashed their gear in a manner they were similar to what they were wearing, gave them weapons that the real guys used, and camo’ed them up in a similar manner. That’s all that historical accuracy is – making sure that you’re using the right guns, the right gear, and the right uniform in the right way. Hollywood is all well and good, but I sure as hell wouldn’t base a kitbash off of anything in John Wayne’s “The Green Berets”.

    Rules
To enter, simply post a picture (or pictures) of your entry in this thread and the name of your piece. If you’d like to post a separate thread for your entry, feel free to create one. If you’ve got a photo reference to show what you based your piece on, you’re encouraged to post it as well.

All entries will be listed in a separate thread in the order that they were received with a poll running for one week. At the end of the poll, the votes from the OSW community will be tallied up and the winners announced.

Entries that will be disallowed are:
-Works that would ordinarily be banned from OSW
-Works that have been posted online on or before December 26, 2016 that were: a) complete or b) substantially complete (2/3 done)
-Works that are judged grossly anachronistic or inaccurate by an impartial panel of Vietnam War kitbashers from the OSW community

    Prizes
And for the part you’ve been waiting for, the prizes:

    First Prize:

BlackOpsToys has generously donated a mint-in-box ACE 101st Airborne Division Hamburger Hill figure, which will go to the overall winner.

    Second Prize:

Guanere has put together a “SOG Recon” gear set for the first runner-up, suitable for running recon across the fence.

    This kit consists of:
-1x SOG-modified “Over the Fence” Uniform
    -1x M56 belt
    -1x M56 suspenders
    -9x M56 canteen covers
    -2x Canteens
    -28x M16 mags
    -1x Knife
    -1x Serum Albumin Can
    -2x Carabiners
    -1x XM177E2

    Third Prize:

Guarnere has also assembled an “Infantry” gear set for the third-place finisher.

    The kitlist includes:
    -1x M1 Helmet
    -1x M56 Web Belt
    -1x M56 Suspenders
    -2x M56 M16 Magazine Pouches
    -2x M67 M16 Magazine Pouches
    -2x M56 Canteen Covers & Canteens
    -8x M16 Magazines
    -1x Ammo Bandolier with 7x M16 Mags
    -1x M56 "Butt" Pack
    -1x M16

In addition to the above prizes, the top three will also receive a signed copy of J. S. Economos’ outstanding Gentle Propositions. This thrilling novel about the Studies and Observation Group comes highly recommended by more SOG veterans than you can shake a stick at. It’s also one of my favorite novels period.

    Mystery Prizes:

We’re also offering some special “surprise” prizes for the kitbashers who tackle the NVA and SOG as part of their entry. Guarnere and I will be personally selecting these winners from our own favorites among the entries. Prizes will include custom gear and pieces by Marcelo Fuentes.

Please free to post any questions either here, or send a PM to either Guarnere or myself.

Good luck to everyone who enters and we’ll see you at the LZ.

Fantastic! Thanks so much Ryan, Guarnere and Black Ops Toys. I like the long time-line on this. Might actually be enough for me to put together something new!

Good luck to all entrants! Let's start bashing!!!

    Nice! Very nice!

The 'Nam contingent here at OSW is really strong - both in numbers and in quality of work.

Though I am strictly WWII, I am excited to see what everyone else comes up with! And I love the guidelines for the contest!

Best of luck to everyone participating and well done to the organizers of the contest for putting it together!

No limit and you can post the whole bash here or elsewhere. It just needs to be a new or original creation (no prior work).

EDIT: Here's a decent "example entry" I put together on the fly.

    "War Trophy"
An early war SF trooper with a captured VC flag. Loadout is based on some photos of Special Forces operating with Vietnamese forces in 1964 and 1965. He carries the early model M16 without the forward assist and a light loadout reflecting his role as an advisor. Also of note are his early model P62 lightweight rucksack and holstered M1911 (pistols were seen as symbols of authority by Vietnamese and highly prized).

Re: "History Comes Alive" - New Vietnam Contest

    Overview:
Deep in the jungles of Vietnam, Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry, the famed Blackhorse Regiment, was a specialized cavalry outfit equipped with tanks and armored assault vehicles. On the morning of March 26, 1970, they began hearing radio calls from an infantry unit four kilometers away that had stumbled into a hidden North Vietnamese Army stronghold. Outnumbered at least six to one, the ninety-man American company was quickly surrounded, pinned down, and fighting for its existence. Helicopters could not penetrate the dense jungle, and artillery and air support could not be targeted effectively. The company was fated to be worn down and eventually all killed or captured.
Overhearing the calls for help on his radio, Captain John Poindexter, Alpha Troop's twenty-five-year-old commander, realized that his outfit was the only hope for the trapped company. It just might be possible that they could "bust" enough jungle by nightfall to reach them. Not making the attempt was deemed unacceptable, so he ordered his men to "saddle up." With the courage and determination that makes legends out of ordinary men, they effected a daring rescue and fought a pitched battle—at considerable cost. Many brave deeds were done that day and Captain Poindexter tried to make sure his men were recognized for their actions.
Thirty years later Poindexter was made aware that his award recommendations and even the records of the battle had somehow gone missing. Thus began the second phase of this remarkable story: a "battle" to ensure that his brave men's accomplishments would never be forgotten again.
The full circle was completed when President Obama stepped to the podium on October 20, 2009, to award the Alpha Troop with the Presidential Unit Citation: the highest combat award that can be given to a military unit.

    Axirun - Nice, man
I talked to one of the admins from OSS (while it still existed) and ZIP, but so far, OSW is the only interested party. If anyone wants to join in, I heartily encourage it. There's no harm playing for awesome free stuff.
Speaking of which, Guarnere has given me the go-ahead to post one of the "secret prizes" for SOG entries: THE DEATH MACHINE.

New Vietnam Contest - Free MIB Figures and Gear Sets-16924257_728038207351077_1030953088_n-jpg

New Vietnam Contest - Free MIB Figures and Gear Sets-16833681_728038200684411_653207524_o-jpg

The actual Death Machine was a heavily modified M60 LMG used by both SEALs and SOG. The M60 was stripped of "excess" bits to lighten its weight and paired with a specially modified ammo drum mounted on a rucksack frame. The result? The ability to fire a continuous stream hundreds of machine gun rounds onto a target with a single pull of a trigger. These were generally only brought out when going hard on a target due to their extreme weight.
