    1:6 scale mules

    Are there any?
I have seen elephants and water buffaloes, but no mules!
I remember my dad saying they used mules in their unit to carry ammo in WWII.
Didn't the Germans use mules also?
Maybe a nice dio could be made .
Or even a scene from the movie" Treasure of Sierra Madre" with Humphey Bogart!

As of 5/15/12, this costs 350HK dollars.
In U.S. dollars it is equal to $45.00, problem is they are sold out. (Cyber hobby)

C-H did a mule with baskets. They cost the earth.

I managed to get one plus a separate mule, and I also picked up a couple of donkeys.

Man, that is nice! you have a great collection there! I saw an elephant on e-Bay, it was great also, but I had no need for one.
    Thanks for the info!

World Peacekeepers (Power Team) made a set with a mule actually. They occassionally show up on ebay.

I believe, according to size, the World Peacekeepers set contains a donkey instead of a mule.

Agree. I have it and it's too small to be a mule.

vince, what unit/theater did your Dad serve in? Mine was a mule pack artilleryman in C Btry/612th FA Bn (PAK) with the MARS Task Force in the CBI. Six mules were used to carry a 75mm Pack Howitzer broken down to it's component parts, and it's trail.

I've been looking for a properly scaled mule in 1:6 for a while now to go along with my DML 75mm Pack Howitzer.

    mule:

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse.

Which is what makes a mule larger than a donkey.

Got me a baby-sized elephant from a thrift store - might put him to good use as a regimental mascot for my Gurkhas!

As for mules... Why not get a barbie sized horse (w/c are too small for cavalry horses anyway - they're basically pony sized) and modify it? Might be cheaper too.

    Grüß Di' Mulischoffeur Vince,

Yeah...the Germans used plenty of mules, or Muli (Moo-LEE). A standard Gebirgsjäger (mountain troop) division had about 5,000 animals in it. They were used to haul artillery, supplies, and wounded up and down the mountains.

Here's the US 75mm Pack Howitzer load configuration:

Wow. To answer some of the questions, my dad was in New Guinea in WWII. He saw mules carry ammo into the jungles before he was sent to Biak Island to guard an airstrip off New Guinea. On Biak natives carried all the ammo and supplies and were paid by chewing gum and cigarettes.
Greg T saw the same elephant I saw on E-Bay. (answer to Texastoyz)

Pops was in the 664th Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Machine gun Battery ( .50 cal Ma Duce was his assigned weapon)
    2 1/2 years in Biak.

    Re: 1:6 scale mules

In Italy in 1944 & 1945 many allied units used mules for
supply and medivac. My dad was in 10th Mountain but
Brazilian troops and 45th Infantry also used s lot of mules.
Of course, Germans, Russians, Italians and Japanese were
    also using mules and horses.
Side note, my dad was 'volunteered' to work with the 10th
Mountain Division mules from time to time, since he had
worked with mules as a farm boy.

I would buy the SOTFW set for that sleeping bag. The pack saddle looks like it should be easy to build.

I picked up a couple at my local market a while back. I painted one with Tamiya XF 85 Rubber Black, and painted the eyes, horns and added a nose ring:

That is one cool looking water buffalo! I love it. Can I ask what material is it made from?

I purchased one from China a while back and mine was made of a heavy porcelain type material. It's somewhat similar to yours except its slightly smaller in scale.

They are made from plastic - they seem to be solid so they are quite heavy.

there are some living wild in the hills not far from where I live. When rice farming was banned in Hong Kong because of the Malaria threat back in the 50's or 60's a lot of buffalo were just let loose and they've survived.

There is an on-going battle between the HK government and people living on the HK island of Lantau over the buffs - the govt. wants the captured, a lot of the local residents want them left alone.

I would guess this is not what most people visualise when they think of Hong Kong!

Are there any sort of company markings on the water buffalo figurine? I am curious about who made them.

And of course the next logical step...acquisition.

I'll have a look when I can. I just checked a couple of boxes ad found 5 cows, 2 buffaloes, 2 mules, 2 donkeys and a lion.

    Re: 1:6 scale mules

I had a pic of an excellent Army Mule someone did from a Marx Thunderbolt. They broadened the muzzle and lengthened the ears, roached his mane and gave him a stringy tail. Darned if I can fnd the pic or the forum it was on.
I've seen a few elephants in Home Goods that might be the right size. That's where I've found a couple of horse statues, too. And they have other animals - many are the leather animals made in India. Some are better than others.
My dad also trained with mules at Camp Hale, Colorado with the 87th Mountain Inf., before the Division was formed. He never made it to Italy, but had lots of references of the 10th using them there. My buddie's dad told me some stories of his assignment to the pack artillery in Italy, and I think he said France.

Check the feebay, Breyer used to do some pretty good size animals that are no longer being made. I saw some in a store in Anaheim, CA once. There was a goat, American Buffalo, bulls, moose, deer, and some other type but they hade them priced at like $100 each pretty much.

Breyers aren't 1/6 though, they're closer to 1/9th scale so they'd be absolutely tiny!
