The Kingdom
Well I had a chance to watch The Kingdom last night. Very interesting movie. Some good bash material as well. I find myself looking forward to the new HT AK's that are coming out.

Good movie. Got a little sick of Jennifer Garner. My opinion...

Great cast, Berg makes good movies. Some critics have knocked it as a "cowboy" movie, but it cuts to the heart of the matter pretty well, I think. The opening sequence should be shown in history classes.

I don't want to turn this into a politically charged thread, but that opening sequence, all I could think was, What a bunch of freakin cowards. Even shot video and forced a young boy to watch. Faces all hidden. It was a well shot sequence and realy did a good job of setting the tone for the entire movie.

I actually meant the hi-speed history animation at the opening.

I couldn't agree more. A lot of people don't know about bin Laden offering to stop Hussien instead of westerers setting foot in the middle east. This was considered the begining of al-Queada becoming a terrorist group (originally they were a veterans group for Afghanistan vets). There is Frontline (a PBS show) episode about Saudi Arabia that a lot of that footage came from:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/saud/
The movie was excellent! Lots of great action and Jason Bateman (I'm a huge Arrested Development fan)!

The HD-DVD version is set on "Very Long Wait" on NetFlix. Weak Sauce.

A real coinky-dink, got together with three old friends (over two centuries of lifespan all combined, LMAO) for our annual Christmas/sometimes New Years rendezvous. Ate a larapin' big dinner at a Chinese restaurant, and since No Country... was sold out, we watched a DVD of The Kingdom. Character dynamics and a patiently spun sense of mutual respect the likes of which you don't usually see. One of my buds hadn't seen it before, due to typical previews that gave no impression of the movie's depth. He was pretty much stunned.

Saw it in the theatre and couldn't wait for the dvd to come out. Heat still wins out for best gunfight ever but the skirmish at the end was way cool I really liked the Farris character.

I agree...the Jennifer Garner character is a bit too much...especially at the end of the movie when they found the elusive terrorist bomber" Abdul Hamzah" and she stabs the much larger male adversary in the melee...people in my theatre were clapping... like gimme a break right? Otherwise the movie has it's merits. I find the Antoine Fuqua ( Training Day and The Replacement Killers ) movie "Tears of the Sun" to be a much better movie and an inspiration for many figures in my collection. Bruce Willis and the crew were trained for 6 months by NAVY SEALS in order to get the lingo and the tactics down pat.

Garner's knife technique seemed pretty sound and serious to me, like she'd been trained. Multiple strikes into areas that did real damage (tho the head thing might've been for drama). With that big bastard it was keep going or die.

I thought when I saw it in the theatres, Jamie Foxx's character shot thru the walls during the close quarter battle. But when I watched it again on DVD it wasnt on there, only in the special features.

Which is why Netflix was created. 20 bucks a month... compared to 3 bucks a movie every time I go to a Hastings, or Blockbuster... Both of which don't have as large of a selection as NetFlix. Now you may think "3 bucks? Whoopidy do!" Well Whenever I go to hastings I don't just get one movie... I get two or three... and I go back about twice a week... Sooo... if it's a 5 week month.. That's about 60 bucks a month.

I just rent via Redbox, 1 dollar rentals, not so bad, but I only rent one every so often.
I thought it was a great movie, I agree with PD and Grunt1162 about the beginning sequence; and the overall film done really well, a fast paced action movie but with real life implications. I think the final note should have been a little stronger, but it probably would have been too preachy.
The Garner knife-play scene wasn't so bad to me, though nothing up til that point except for before a line she said before they took off gave me the impression she was capable of it, then again thats probably the point. And sometimes Foxx was a little too casual with the lingo, but he was cool, with the coolest being Farris. Someone should kitbash those two.

Berg was supposed to do The Losers movie before he jumped, and I think that judging by the last half hour and the similarities between the the teams Aisha/Garner, Jensen and Bateman's character he would have been a good choice.
But I was talking to Andy Diggle in Dublin a few weeks back and he was saying The Kingdom had been written by Berg before he did The Kingdom - a dry run maybe?

Great movie. And the opening sequence was very impressive. Overall, very well done with some fantastic action scenes!
And I didn't see anything wrong with Garner's fight at the end.
