Another crack in my heart...
I don't know how many music affectionados there are here, but I've been one almost as long as I've been a fan of GI Joe.
Suffice it to say the world of rock music lost a elder statesman yesterday. Jon Lord, keyboardist and founding member of Deep Purple died due to complications with pancreatic cancer.
During a professional career that lasted 50 years, he and a handful of others displayed the prowess with a set of keyboards that a punk kid like me (in the early 70's) could only dream of. In later years, he continued his wizardmanship, both solo and in bands, and I followed all with great admiration, respect and, truthfully, awe.
Unlike other keyboard players who relied heavily on synthesizers (nothing wrong with that), Lord held true to his Hammond organ - affectionately dubbed "the beast." He and his keyboard tech developed a method for amping his instrument through traditional guitar mechanisms to give it a nasty texture that has yet to be duplicated.
He is one of my heroes and I'm a little "less" today.
